I've been reading 'Masters of DOOM' for the past few days and I can't put it down. Is there anything else like this out there? This early stuff is awesome.

Thanks

"Game Over" by David Sheff. It's not a "game" book, rather its about Nintendo and the gaming industry in general. Fantastic book I would recommend to any gamer.

The Ultimate History of Video Games by Steven L. Kent

I find it quite good. Masters of Doom, Game Over, and this one are considered the best books about the subject.

You can ban me for posting links, but I honestly couldn't give a flying fook. Ultimately it's for your benefit if you're interested in the book.

I'll add my voice to Sabin's - Game Over is an amazing book. Out of date now (hell, I think it was out of date when the N64 was released), but still a very worthwhile read.

Aye, the original only just goes up to the N64/PS1 era... barely. There has since been a new edition released (Game Over - Press Start To Continue) that carries on even further. Still WELL worth reading though.

There was a series of documentaries on Discovery Channel here some months ago, very very informative. I'd recommend those too. I have no idea what the series was called though.

Yeah, I saw those series too, a couple of years ago, a "cradle to grave" documentary I'd say. From Pong to the console derp nowadays.

I think I saw that too, human_help. I might be mislead by this, Wiki says "Rise of the videogame" started back in 2007, but their website says 21 November 2011.. Hm Philosopheraptor

You've available, at usenet at least, the British Gamemaster TV series:

Although this might be of more interest to retro fans.

Is the entire series available? The last time I checked online for GamesMaster downloads, I could only find a handful of episodes at best - nothing at all like the seven seasons available in total Sad

there was an entire series of like... i think 5 or 6 doom books by the way, you may want to try to find those as well, they're extremely rare though from what i can tell, i used to own two of them, they were named after... i think levels in doom II? or maybe difficulty settings, i forget which, they were a lot better than i expected though, honestly... i doubt it's really that great of a series in general, but i enjoyed the heck out of them and tried to find more but couldn't.

they mostly center around the exploits of one "flynn taggart" the marine you play the game as, some decent science fiction ideas thrown around in them too, which... i'm gonna avoid spoiling.

Really good book too, they had it all but then "threw" it all away, starting with romero beginning to slack a bit on the design department Sad

Aaaaaaand now I think I'll go play some doom

I read Ultimate History of Video Games and while it's informative and entertaining, it is also almost completely US centric. And even at that, it's almost exclusively about arcades and consoles. Gaming on home computers is ignored, Sierra is hardly mentioned, LucasArts are hardly mentioned, and Richard Garriott and Microprose aren't acknowledged at all.

Replay by Tristan Donovan is written in the same manner, but it offers much broader perspective. I'd really recommend it before Ultimate History, but both are entertaining.

Hardcore Gaming has detailed reviews of both and plenty of other gaming books;
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/vgbooks/vgbooks.htm

They also have their own series. The Guide to Classic Graphic Adventures and one about Sierra games.

By the sounds of it, it isn't that good - not particularly impartial, or well-written. But it might be worth the time if you can find an epub of it. Smile
