Who hasn't dreamt, at some point, of filling a pool full of jello and swimming in it? In some of us, that dream never died. Some of us kept dreaming: what if the whole street was jello? Or the continent? The world!? The Floor is Jelly posits a universe made of jello, made purely for one's own amusement. No longer need we look to our walls and our floors and sigh, "How solid! How sadly immalleable! How I wish for a world consisting only of Non-Newtonian fluids!" That world has arrived, via the dark magic of videogames, as The Floor is Jelly.
A game by Ian Snyder, with sound by Disasterpeace, (IGF 2012 Student FINALIST)
This game is a technical marvel, as well as an artistic delight (and a downright fun platformer). The artificial physics feel just perfect. Snyder built the bounciness system from scratch, and you can tell he tinkered with and tweaked it extensively to find the optimal balance between fun and a sense of realism. The level design is staggeringly good, and as much as I deliberately tried to break the game, I found it impossible to get myself permanently stuck or to find any sort of bug.
Every second of the game is enhanced by the soothing, emotionally resonant music of Disasterpeace. This may be a bold statement, but I think the work here tops most of the tracks from the musician’s acclaimed FEZ soundtrack. The music exhibits such warmth and playfulness that you could believe it was produced by some natural process within the bouncy bowels of the planet itself. The audio also keeps things relaxed, even when you’re on the verge of frustration from bouncing for the twentieth time, trying to reach that one spot.
The Floor is Jelly is a wonderful exercise in meditation and relaxation masquerading as a clever puzzle game with fresh mechanics and a beautiful soundtrack. 8/10
The Floor is Jelly is a pleasure to experience. Each area introduces something new, interesting, and exciting. It’s an inspiring display of artisan talent from its choice of gradient color scheme, to the programming behind the physics of its world, to its hauntingly perfect soundtrack. It does whatever it wants, and whatever it can, but its intrigue never drags the player along. The Floor is Jelly is a mastering of the independent game. 9.5/10
