i'd love to be more interested than i am and don't get me wrong, gabriel knight games were very good but.... they sort of came up second stringer to other sierra classics for me, i guess drama and deep intricate plots meant nothing compared to comedic genius to me back then.
still though, happy to see all these sierra memories from the past resurfacing, i really didn't want sierra's legacy of awesome adventure games to be over when it finally was and fans started imitating (poorly) just was salt on the wounds, reminders of how it used to be, all these new games coming up however make me glad that the people who know what they're doing still care instead of just the poor fans.
can honestly say, i've never played a sierra online adventure game i didn't like, then again, i can't say i've played them all, i still haven't given phantasmagoria a go, it's a short list of ones i've missed though.
GK SOF was very good from what i remember, probably the pinnacle of the series actually, GK TBW was decent as well, hell.... even as amazed as i am to be saying this, the third was actually possible to put up with, it'll be interesting to see what's in store for number four.

Yeah i am not sure, the game play looks bad (animations and clunkyness), after all those years I'd expect some evolution to the genre, Broken age and deponia were good, but they're not really the same.

Broken age was a struggle to play. The childishness of it and the horrible art style was just too much.

Ignoring Walker's subjective opinions (his thoughts on the main character, for instance) it still sounds below average at best (poor graphics, animations, puzzles, stupid death by opening gate). I'm interested in the hump's opinion, but I'm not even gonna pirate it.

Well I played it for an hour and a half. Here's my short bullet points:
- the intro was quite well made and moody
- the premise of the game is very interesting and certainly got me hooked so far
- the main character has an interesting skill where he can analyse things - it's a fun mini game
- the backdrops are beautifully drawn - I love them
- you can show hot spots which is nice if you don't like pixel hunting
- the music is very reminiscent of Gabriel Knight 2 which is a good thing
- the blend of 2D and 3D works rather well
- the interface works quite well
There's some negatives too:
- animation is pretty bad (especially the lip syncing)
- the main character walks and moves very oddly and stiffly
- the main character's attitude will polarize people. He's a rather stuck up art dealer who doesn't think too highly of the non-rich - not easy to identify with but as someone who has played a ton of adventure games, I don't need to be able to identify with the character I'm playing. I kinda enjoy his attitude - it's more watching him behave than making him say what I want him to say which I don't mind.
So far, I like it and will keep playing it for sure. It seems more a game of investigation than object hunting which is good - that's what Gabriel Knight 2 was all about as well.

You've seen unbiased professional reviews already, so I believe there it is time for a completely biased review by one that pretty much loved all the the previous iterations of Jane Jansens work. Well not a review, mere preview as I'm not far in the game.
Startup looked fishy, why would you have space mapped to jump in an adventure game? Then I entered main screen and it opened with with somewhat lame main theme, and when I read comic pre-story with it's lacklustre art, I quickly got a cheap vibe coming out of the game. I pushed start, and it's intro initially confirmed that notion with lousy music transition and video clarity. Then it started. Credits rolled; vague video in the back, cave drawings, medieval artwork, tarot cards, iconic Vietnam shots, skull, video of cellsplitting, the bomb... All accompanied by a beautiful track. It's basically nothing, credits, picture collage, nothing else... Still, I got goosebumps, and I knew this ain't just some dumb little game. This is it. Jane Jansen is back.
Main game is just the same. Animations are on par, if not worse with those in GK3, regular music is of midi quality, artwork is very detailed, but clunky, almost ugly on first look, same goes for interface. You need two clicks just to inspect a hotspot and right and middle mouse buttons are nearly useless, you have outright bad decisions in gamedesign. I could read newspaper clip, when I first examined it, but not on other attempts, letter that I opened was in insanely low font, as are fonts on your mobile, that you need for variety of tasks.
But you know what? I bloody damn couldn't care less. Story is sublime. I don't know how she manages it, but she always hits something that pulls me in. I always loved history, jet few shows, and no games so far captured it as well as this one. Before long I was appraising historical artefacts with intuitive game mechanic, puzzling motives of intriguing character, meeting mysterious agencies and travelling around the world as Malachi Rector, antique dealer and appraiser. Rich, apparently simple man. But like everything here, even his name isn't simple. As Gabriel Knight had his title in his name, so has Malachi Rector his. And it is deserved.

The opening credits reminded me of the start of a 'bond' movie, all the backdrops flashing by, various imagery, and the music, could easily be a 'bond' theme, got me right in the mood for the game
So far I like it, not far in, but the interface is clean and easy to use. OK, the graphic style may not suit all, but that's what I've come to expect from the JJ games, I really don't mind it at all.
Main character is an arrogant sarcastic knob, lol, but I kinda like him, so far

Jane Jensen (Jenna Jameson was that the one you thought about?) I think is the writer of these games, kinda like Sid Meier's Civilization or well I don't know of many games using the creators actual name in the title.
(Putting themselves into games does happen now and then though, Lord British is a popular example of that, or using the product name in the title or other licensed materials which is common in sports games and racing.)

Yeah, she's quite a vet when it comes to games like these. I loved the Gabriel Knight series - it made some mistakes but in general, they were so different from other games that you just ignored those small flaws. The music, the style, the type of puzzles - they were far more organic and realistic in a sense. It was more about the story, unraveling the mysteries and progression than "compine X with Y".

Haven't played it yet but I'll get around to it eventually, was planning on finishing some of the older adventure titles first, some of the Daedalic games for example or the Cognition games.
(Gray Matter too which I think this author was also involved with.)

Gabriel Knight (the first game) is THE best adventure game Sierra ever made, so if you haven't played it yet i would definitely recommend it.
