We have always set ourselves a big goal for Dead Island 2: to create the sequel that takes Dead Island to the next level. A game that takes what our fans tell us they love about Dead Island – multiple different characters to play with, co-op, and turning a paradise setting into a zombie slaughter melee – and a game that adds a ton more content and combat options on top of that.
And we wanted to have all of that that done for release in Spring 2015.
We have been looking at the game long and hard, and we have decided we didn’t reach that goal we set out to achieve quite yet. This is why we have decided to delay Dead Island 2 to 2016.
Right now we are focusing purely on development, and we will have more info to share at a later stage.
We know that our fans will be disappointed by this news, but by giving Dead Island 2 more time we are confident that everyone will get a better game to play as a result.
With Dead Island 2, Deep Silver has always been dedicated to delivering the sequel that Dead Island fans deserve. After careful consideration, today we announce the decision to part ways with development partner YAGER. We will continue working towards bringing our vision of Dead Island 2 to life, and we will share further information at a later stage.
Dead Island 2 has had a troubled development. The original game's developer Techland wasn't signed up to work on a sequel, instead parting ways with publisher Deep Silver and making Dying Light. After Techland, Yager, the developer of Spec Ops: The Line, took on the project. The developer didn't show off much of the game, besides an impressive E3 cinematic, before it parted ways with
Yager said at the time that its idea for the game had "fallen out of alignment" with Deep Silver's. The development killed off the studio, with Yager filing for bankruptcy shortly after ending its contract with Deep Silver.
Well, now it's Sumo Digital's turn to dance with the meat grinder. Sumo has made its name by contracting out to lots of publishers over the years: it was the team behind Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed (which is a great Mario Kart-like racer, although with some odd characters in its roster – I mean, why the hell is Danika Patrick in there?) LittleBigPlanet 3, and it's currently also working on Crackdown 3 for Xbox One.
“It’s an honour to be charged with the evolution of such an important franchise in Deep Silver’s catalogue,” Sumo Digital's Paul Porter told MCV in a statement. “We’re looking forward to exceeding fan expectation with an ambitious design that we’re confident will take bone-crunching, visceral, zombie action to a whole new level.”
I'm really intrigued to see what Dead Island 2 will eventually look like when it comes out. Yager's take on the game seemed to embrace the silliness of the original game (that went against how the the original was first presented). I hope that's not the aspect of the game's development that fell out of alignment with Deep Silver. We need more silly zombie games.
The good news is its not dead, the possibly bad news is its been passed between developers and is now in the hands of Sumo Digital? :/
There is also a remaster of the original Dead Island including Riptide due in the next couple of months? I may have to instabuy that
"Dead Island 2 is in development at Sumo Digital, and we are excited by the progress the team are making with Deep Silver's most successful IP. When we are ready to share more information, we will."
