I knew it would come to this eventually. Sad

She was 13 years old, when the breed's average is between 9-10. I was just 9 when we got her.

She started having trouble standing up in our home, so we drove her to my grandparents', where she had another (young) dog to play with and huuuge "soft" fields to run around and she could get up easier.

This year we found out she had colon cancer, and because she was so old she couldn't get an operation, just pills for the pain and the swelling, thankfully she wasn't in pain anymore and the tumor got smaller.

Then she started having trouble getting up at all. First it was a day. Next it was two days. On the third day a vet came to my grandparents'. Over the phone it seemed like she was already a lost case (because of her horrible spine problems).

When the vet with the injection arrived, she got up, started running, barking at the guy.

I know, it was just a coincidence, but it almost seemed like she wanted to show "hey, I'm not going to die yet!"

She got better.

Then she got worse.

She didn't get up for three days, didn't pee or poo until my grandfather dragged her out to the fields.

The vet arrived.

Because she was a huge dog (~65 kg), she actually had to receive 3x the dosage for the anesthesia. She fell asleep. Then the vet gave her the final injection.

Goodbye, Lucy. You will be missed. Sad

My condolences. And as long as she died painless (instead of forcing her to live in pain), you did the right thing.

Sorry to hear Neon, we had a golden as well and lost her when she was 14. Which like your dog is already well past their life expectancy.

It's a typical problem of them to have in later years. Ours had hip problems and in the last 4 years you saw her getting more and more having trouble with getting up to eventually not getting up without help.

We had her since I was 12, 6 years later and still think of her. So I can relate to what you are feeling.

But yeah, like Toni said, try to think of all those great times you had with the dog, it helps a bit. Smile

She wasn't actually a golden, but a kuvasz, a Hungarian breed. Smile

Thanks for all the kind words guys. Smile

Thinking of getting a new one? While i'm sure you're really sad and don't want to think that you're replacing it, but i'm sure a new dog can help relieve some emotional distress. If you have any that is. Same thing happened with my previous cat. It was 18 years old and i lived with it for that entire period, and when the cat suddenly declined and we had to go for the injection i was wrecked. A while later my sister came home with a stray cat she felt sorry for, and it helped tremendously!

Sorry for your loss man, hope you can get over it faster than I did, lost my dog due to some colon problems aswell, she couldn't walk anymore and was in constant pain. Although you always think that it's for the best, so the dog doesn't suffer anymore, it still hurts just as much. 8-9 months later and that sad feeling is still there, at least for me. Sad

It's hard to cope with this situation, but time will heal everything, and eventually you will be able to talk about how awesome she was without breaking down. You will never forget all the good moments spent together, I can guarantee you that (experienced the same thing after my 19year old cat died two years ago)..stay strong mate.

Very sorry to hear that, I've lost three dogs in my lifetime and it hurts just as much as it did the first time every single time.
Best cure for it is getting a new dog, don't let yourself get depressed by the absence thats created by her death.
Fill the absence with a new pup Smile
