Lol, i live in the south part, on the main city, Santo Domingo. Would be cool to meet up, i suppose if my car is ok by that time i could make a sightseeing trip if money permits.
Punta Cana is an excellent choice for resorts always hearing good things about it, Puerto Plata area has been pretty lacking lately. Higuey i dont know, thats the area of Playa Area Gorda

I can confirm that Punta Cana is teh oresum. Especially Isla Saona, a paradise (for tourists, that is).
It's only reachable by boat, but it's worth it!

Nice Kuro! Yeah Punta Cana is pretty safe like Lopin said. Granted, I went there 10 years ago, but shouldn't be different now. It was already an uber-touristic area with dozens of 4-5 star resorts, nothing that you should worry about.
However things change a lot if you want to visit the cities like San Pedro, La Romana etc, you need to be really careful there. I didn't venture that far, because there was no need too, the hotel where I stayed organized guided tours throughout all the most interesting places in the area, and that was enough.
Didn't get any special vaccines as far as I remember, if you already have the routine ones you should be good to go. The only really annoying thing was, mosquitoes, mosquitoes everywhere
