So it was 20+ years since I last did any programming but im tempted to pick it up again. My question is - what c++ compiler should I go for? (w8.1 compatible).
Or do you have any suggestions on other languages to learn?

What do you want to do? C# is probably a better choice unless you plan on doing something requiring every last bit of performance.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 is by far the best IDE on Windows (everywhere?) for C++ or C# (Especially with some neat plugins like Resharper for C# or Visual Assist for C++). Compiler that comes with visual studio is good enough for 95% of the people as well.

Get yourself the free Visual Studio 2013 express edition if you want to do C# (which I would recommend as well).

Of course you could also download Eclipse and do some Java programming, but unless it is some special framework (android or other) or web service you are targeting, I'd say go for C# instead.

Or you can just fire up your favorite text editor (Sublime, Notepad++, ...) and start coding some HTML, CSS & Javascript Smile

Why not develop for mobile? I assume you have a smartphone. I'd say this is a lot more accessible these days to start learning programming, than the desktop. Android development is practically free, just download the tools, set up a project and go at it. And Java is, while not as good as C#, much more accessible than C++ or C.

I would recommend thinking of a project first that interests you, then slowly start at it. This is true about whatever field of development you choose. It is better to have a goal than merely read a book or listen to tutorials. First have a goal, then read and listen. With mobile, setting up a goal can be quite easy. Have an idea and no app fulfils it? Great! No idea of your own? Find an app you like a lot, and try to recreate it as much as possible. Start with something simple, then move to more advanced stuff. You may even get to put it in the store and let people enjoy it. Smile
