Electronic Arts is "building a lot of new IPs" around the world, according to Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President of EA Studios, and one of them at Jade Raymond’s Motive studio in Montreal is filling an important gap in EA’s development portfolio.
"If you look at the biggest segment in our industry, which is action, we don't have a lot," Soderlund told IGN. "EA is not known to make gigantic action games like Assassin's Creed or Batman or GTA or those types of games that are really big. The strategic direction that we put in motion is to expand our portfolio more into that segment, to see what can we bring to gamers that maybe hasn't been done before."
The common thread among those franchises, of course, is that they’re open world games. I asked Soderlund if he was speaking specifically about Motive making a game at that scale.
"Maybe," he said. "I’m not suggesting we're going to go after GTA and sell 50 million units. We would love to! But what I'm saying is those types of absolutely AAA, big productions is what we want to do. And I think for us to do that, we need the right people."
To accomplish this, Soderlund explained, "you need a leadership and people that have done this in the best and they've done it successfully in the past. That, coupled with a large ambition to invest in new IP. We want to. We're building a lot of new IPs today but we want to invest more money into new IP."
Can you imagine the amount of sheer outrage and media attention some salaciously nude french cabaret dancers would generate in this day and age? They should totally go for it!
Damnit I miss that game - it was all class.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

I love Saboteur so much that a sequel made by today's Electronics Arses would only make me rage..
They could however do a Godfather III, which would compete against Mafia III, a battle of derptitans!
Focusing on new IPs though is an inevitable move, when you've already butchered all the good existing franchises
Saboteur had that amazing mood....The black and white when zee germans controlled a sector and bright colors when they lost control. Solid story. The irishman was no idealist. He was in for the revenge, boobs, drinks and thrills. My kind of dude.
Yeah, with Amy Hennig who worked on the Uncharted series.
Visceral did some good work in the past, and Hennig is apparently quite talented, so hopefully whatever this collaboration results in won't be an abomination.
I wouldn't mind Uncharted in space with a young Han Solo as Drake, and Chewbacca as Sully.
"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.
Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty
“Today we’re building an action genre product that’s probably in our fiscal 2020 or 2021, as well as action-oriented games around the Star Wars genre,” said Jorgenson. “Most of what we’re investing in that’s incremental now probably comes in fiscal 2019 and 2020.”
In other words, don’t expect the game to be released until sometime between April 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020 – at the least. If slated for fiscal year 2021, it will land between April 1 2020 and March 31, 2021.
The large “Assassin’s Creed-style” project was announced in November last year, when former Ubisoft staffer Jade Raymond was named Group GM of the new Montreal studio Motive and Visceral Games.
“We do have a new IP coming next year. We haven’t yet announced it, but it’s something that you’ll see probably coming up soon,” Jorgenson continued. “And clearly that’s part of our investment for the franchise, as well as continuing building out the Battlefront franchise with Star Wars for fiscal 2018 as well.”
The company’s 2018 fiscal year starts in April 1, 2017 and ends on March 31, 2018. So we expect a new Battlefield game to be released sometime during calendar 2017.
