Getting my free Gigabyte GTX 980 tomorrow. 'Cause it's free I did not want to be too greedy and initially planned for the 970, but I'll end up with the 980 and the bigger PSU that it requires. Also free.
Surprisingly enough, my old PSU by OCZ lasted for a good number of years and still going strong. If only it had more wattage I'd keep it.

Between these 4 970s:
ASUS GEFORCE GTX970 STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5
EVGA GEFORCE GTX970 SUPERCLOCKED
GIGABYTE GEFORCE GTX970 GV-N970G1 GAMING-4GD
MSI GEFORCE GTX970 GAMING 4G
which is the one that so far has the least issues (and least frequently reported I suppose if that makes sense)? eg Coil whine etc.

For me it boiled down between the Strix and the G1 Gaming.

what about the least clocked zotac? http://www.zotac.com/products/graphics-cards/geforce-900-series/gtx-970/product/gtx-970/detail/geforce-gtx-970.html
I could get it for 319 euros. How would it compared to MSI or gygabite. I think I would have to buy a new case with giga, since its bigger

Palit is 343 euros the cheapest here. I was actually considering MSI before and I wouldnt mind paying a around 370 if it's worth it.

My MSI has been awesome, no coil whine (apart from 9K fps unigine splash screen, where all of my cards has whined a bit). Overclocks like hell and stays cool, can only recommend, only minus is that there is no backplate for the looks.

what does the backplate give me if the thing is under the table inside a case?

I'm with you there.
In fact, I hated when manufacturers started putting led lights all over the place, making the thing you do NOT usually look at become a very disturbing element.

Would a Antec 520W be enough for this:
Z97 Mobo
i5-4690K @ 4.5GHz
8 GB RAM (2x4)
1 2GB HDD
1 SSD
GTX 970 (Don't which one and don't know if it matters)
Used one of those sites that measure your wattage and got something like 511W at full load (whole PC), but I'm not sure about it. Sorry if I'm derailing the thread.

Protection of the circuit board and it disperses the heat somewhat (tho as far as I got it, the effect is minimum).

Yeah, heat dissipation via the back plate is completely negligible since so little of it actually touches anything. And Breezer_ said "for looks":

Some heavy cards PCB can bend little without backplate, but for example this MSI card has metal plate on the other side which will keep PCB straight.

That system should not consume over 350-400W even under heavy load.

Thing is that you need a margin on PSU's due to loss in transformation, effectiveness etc. and the fact that their peak capacity isn't something you should ever reach.
511W does sound quite unreasonable for that system description. If you had 780Ti's in SLI, i7 4790K @ 4.5+ and ran the most taxing benchmark, then you'd reach 500W.. but not with an i5 4690K and a single 970 (the 9x0-series are very efficient and doesn't draw 2/3's of the power of their 7x0-series counterparts.

That must've been a shit calculator. Try Outervision's, that one is a lot closer to reality: http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine
Even with 1.35v on your CPU for that 4.5 GHz they come out to just over 300W consumed. Add an overclock to the 970 and you'll probably touch 370-380, which means your 550W is *more* than enough.
In fact, generally you want to make sure that under load you're between 50% and 80% load on your PSU; so that's between 520 * 0.5 = 260W and 520 * 0.8 = 416W. Idle that system'll consume somewhere around 80W or so, which is still 15% of the PSU's rated wattage (the lower, the worse; a PSU's efficiency curve takes a nose dive below 20% load).
So yes, that 520W is pretty much perfect for such a setup. Especially considering Antec hasn't produced a 520W unit from anyone else besides Seasonic by my knowledge, so it's a good unit too
My last PC was on a 550W PSU and that went through an Intel EE 955+8800 GTX (this combo consumed more even at stock than an i7+970 now) and then to my E8400 + HD5870. I sold that system 4 years ago, at which point the PSU was already 6 years old I think. I know for a fact that that system is still running just fine right now. Which means that that PSU has held out for a decade, after being used for several high-end gaming systems
And even now I'm just on a "measly" 660W
