friend of mine has ps3 that stuck at 63% of an update
he rebooted it after an hour but it's trying to update itself and getting stuck at the same percentage

any cure for this, it's 40gb version

i googled a bit but except sending it to $ony i found no real solution and he is out of warranty, so any thoughts?

so you don't even get into the xmb?

keep your finger down when switching it on (full reset), if this doesnt help, maybe try this:
remove the hdd, download the update via pc and put it on a usb stick

Is it installing the update, or downloading? It could just be downloading very slowly (which the PS3 is prone to) - in which case you would be able to cancel the operation with the controller (just make sure its plugged in to rule out battery or bluetooth). If it still doesn't work after a hard reset (switch off the PS3, hold down power button for around 5 seconds until the second beep, not including the first when you initially press) I'd probably be looking at formatting and starting again. I'm not sure how you go about that personally but FAT32 seems to be the file format PS3 uses, so should be simple enough with google.

I can't see Sony doing any different, but obviously worth researching before formatting if you've got stuff you wanna keep on there.

it's getting stuck at installing update at exactly same place
data is irrelevant and can be destroyed if it makes ps3 workable, so if i extract hdd and format it with pc [fat32?] will ps3 allow me to use it?

Yeah, I have a feeling it will format it itself anyway - but you just need to get rid of the PS3 OS.

ok then
thnx the nfo fellas

edit: ok got ps3, he forgot to mention it's freezing after it gives error 800xxx contact support, then it's freezing and u have to do cold reboot, but nvm that

i reformated the hd and now it doesn't boot at all, just blank screen flashing for a second and after about 40 seconds it turns itself off, update must have corrupted the system

after some googling i digged up how to restore it and hit the wall, he forgot his controller with which u have to press PS button in order to restore PS3 system, considering i don't have one either it will bugg me till i get a controller

well i got the controller and tried every possible solution to recover ps3 with no luck
it stucks at exactly 66% all the time, i even tried different hdd, same shit
when ps3 bricks it bricks for good, thanx m$ for making unstable yet recoverable console
coz of shit like that i will never buy a ps3 ever, altho i like the design overall and how it comes with all bellsnwhistles for the same price as 360, but this fw bussiness lives u pretty much with 300 euro of paper weight
