I'm thinking about getting a new notebook but I have no idea where to start looking. Budget is around $900 - 1000. My knowledge is very limited when it comes to laptops cuz I've never had one. What I'm looking for is something that can run programs like Photoshop and Flash CS4.
I wouldn't mind if some more recent games run on it but that's not a priority.

With that money you should be able to get a decent notebook with ~ 2.4Ghz Core2Duo, 4GB RAM and a GeForce 9600gt @ 15,4 inch display

Nothing beats a lenovo and I highly recommend getting a thinkpad R or T series if you want something that works and rocks. Hard drive anti shock monitoring system, mangesium alloy roll cage to help if dropped and also acts as a reciever for wireless signals.
They don't really make gaming system though they advertise their ysomething 550 or whatever as one.
Lenovo's keyboards are also the best ever including their also lil red pin point mouse thing that's copywrited by lenovo, I never use that lil touch pad.
and since their laptops are custom orderd, if someone returns it or decides they don't want it, the laptop is moved to their outlet store and like 40% off or something.

You can use something like www.myus.com to get a US address.

I got my eye on a Lenovo SL500 15,4".
CPU is Intel P7370, GPU is GF9300M... a resolution of 1680x1050. I can get it for about $950.
Any thoughts?

these look damn good! wasn't thinking about getting a gaming laptop but for that price... what the hell.
oh, and I'm planning to use another service similar to myus but thanks anyway Rinze.
One last question. Since voltages in America and Europe are different, do I need a converter of some sort?

You need power converter. You have these:

Turns out getting one of those Asus machines ain't really worth it. After all the added costs I'd have to pay at least $1200, which is too much.

They look nice and I really wanna get one someday but ordering from the US isn't an option... it's simply not worth it. And I've got a very limited choice here when it comes to Lenovo-s.
How is Acer? More specifically the Aspire 5738g. Price for those specs is perfect. Any feedback about it?
Or Dell Studio 1555 (T6450G)?

You usually don't need a powerconverter for a laptop adaptor, because they'll accept pretty much anything. Just get the right cable.

It looks sexy with that thing on the side. I do mind the 18" monitor tho, unless it's for table use rather than for travel or carrying around...

I got a Dell Studio 1555. I'm gonna be using it primarily for uni stuff, and also as a desktop replacement at least for some time since I'm going abroad.
It's OK so far. The keyboard is nice, display is so-so, sound is good, still gotta try some heavier games on it. Best thing about it is probably the 3-year warranty. lol
