Okey, so the problem is, I have an old motherboard...

The ABIT IB9, P965, Socket-775

According to this site:
http://www.abit.com.tw/cpu-support-list/mb/intel_p965_ib9.htm

It supports at least two different quad cores, Q6600 and Q6700.

But my question is, would there be any difference running the higher end ones listed on that page that don't have an "OK" status (which I assume they haven't tested)? Technically speaking, I don't know much about hardware, but I have built computers before so I know how to put them together. But I don't know if there would be any reason for those QUADs to not work, when the lower end does, but I bet at least one of you guys should know.

My C2D 2.13ghz is starting to really torment me in terms of performance, it's my largest and only bottleneck at the moment so would really like to get a Quad, and not have to go through the trouble of getting a new motherboard for it.

If you dont want to change your board, get the q6600 and clock it up, its like 2 E6600's and they clock high on air. If I put in my Q6600 (which i still havent been needing to do) I would clock it like my Dual core from 2.4 to 3.4ghz.

1. If your stock temp is 46 then it's not a 'great' cooler or maybe your case needs some more air-flow.
2. How do you know that the cpu has become a bottle-neck? If you mean games then oc'ing your cpu will not get you as much results as you might think.
3. C2Ds are great for oc'ing and once you sort out your air-flow problem you should be able to get to anywhere between 2.8-3.2 Ghz without any major increases in voltage/temps.
4. The non-supported cpus might run on the board but it's a long-shot.

I`d consider getting a new board as well. You wont have much fun with a q6600 - and it wont overclock any good.
99% of the games wont make any usse of the 2 additional cores. Clockspeed is crucial.

If u need quad badly, I`d say get a brand ip45 board and a q9550 (for some nice and easy overclocking).

If you dont need 4 cores right now: get a brand p45 board and a (cheap) e6300 (45nm!!! not the old one). overclocks very well, too. And you can reach 3,6-4Ghz even with the cheapest ram.

as said before - overclocking is a must. but its save and easy. so no worries.
