I'd thought I'd make an own thread for it since the other one gets somewhat cluttered with a mixture of talk about this and the new Tales Of Monkey Island episoded by Telltale.

The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition

  • Official Website: CLICKITY CLICK
  • Publisher: LucasArts
  • Developer: LucasArts
  • Genre: Point and Click Adventure
  • Release Date: July 2009 (out now)
  • Story:
    Quote:
Seriously? No. If you don't know Monkey Island you've done something wrong the last 20 years

  • Multiplayer: Yeah, sure, in a point and click adventure...
  • System requirements:
    Quote:
That thing you're using to post, no seriously, no idea but they can't be that high...

  • Multilanguage: Multi 5
  • Preview:Gamespot
  • Review:Eurogamer
  • Screenshots:Gamespot

Hope people use this thread so the whole mess in the other gets cleaned up...

So. Is there any way to skip text passages? It's kinda annoying if you clicked the same line again and have to listen to the same speech again and again...
And, does anybody else have the feeling that you have to click a little bit beneath the line you wanna choose? Or is that caused by the resolution?

if you're using vista , select properties of MISE.exe and click 'disable visual themes'

if you go to 'how to play' it will tell u how to skip dialogue text

on the other hand, I, among many others , are having trouble playing this game at all. Jumpy menus, jumpy mouse, uncontrollable mouse, controls not doing as they should.

Good luck

Not sure. I wasn't impressed by the menu screen or interface. In fact one screen had no button to get back out of. I had to actually press the escape key (!) and this is supposed to be the SPECIAL EDITION of a PC classic. Oh well. Other than that the GAME is golden. The modern upgrade is very good, aside from the lack of additional animation flourishes to bring it truly up to date, but I had the same problems with the text not being skippable and the *somehwat* inprecise nature of selection.

There is also the inventory/interaction portion of the game which is a bit of a chore even in the modernised version.

...but it's only about five pounds so small complaints. Just, not really a SPECIAL edition feeling as Eurogamer pointed out in its nice review.

Well, pressing backspace doesn't work for me (as for some other).
Either I'll figure it out or I have to live with it, could be worse.

Skip dialogue works fine here.
Use backspace instead of left arrow key.

Worthy makeover for a great game, though I don't really like the overly cartoony look Guybrush has had ever since MI3.

Yeah, sort of true, sadly. I wish they would have made him look a little more like the old one...

At the end it says "Guybrush Treepwood will return" so we can expect "Monkey Island 2 - Le Chuck's Revenge - Special Edition".

The inventory system is pathetic in the new edition.. had to switch to old interface for many of the inventory puzzles.

You are absolutely right! I love this remake but this control scheme really needs to be improved in a patch or more likely in the next remake from LucasArts.

You can still skip dialogue with . in the classic version... so for the boring dialogue I just switched to classic mode and pressed . to skip each line. Quite annoying that they didn't implement the same in the enhanced mode though.

YOU CANNOT IMPROVE ON PERFECTION!

monkey island was perfect, the special edition shines only for the voice and music, the rest is crap and actually takes away from the MI experience.

Could this be a catalyst for more old classics being remade with improved grafics? Dare we hope for Loom SE, Fate of atlantis, day of the tentacle, full throttle, grim fandango etc etc etc?

Holy moly is this game really 20 years old? I tried playing it on Amiga 500 as a kid, but could't understand any english at that time, sweet to relive it today
