Or, you could install Windows 7 and use a VM for all your XP-only needs.

But not everybody have a virtualization capable processor.
BTW, XP mode=XP SP3 image file + Microsoft Virtual PC. It's not even pre-installed because of several reasons.

Exactly. Also VMWare is faster than VPC even with the CPU assisted virtualization, but differences are very small in these occasions.

No, unless we're talking DOS games, and even then, DOSBox is faster.

Karmeck - for basic gaming that doesn't rely too heavily on direct 3d you can do that in vmware on pc. it's pretty basic so don't expect too much.
the unity feature is like the xp mode in vpc. where you run vmware app outside of vmware window. it will appear like a regular app running in the host os environment. except it's really, really laggy and slow.

Gaming in VM's won't satisfy anyone until they've virtualised the GPU as well unless we're talking about old classics that doesn't require powerful 3D capabilities. And for obvious reasons 3D gaming isn't a priority for VPC or VMWare, they're 99% aimed at desk-work (legacy apps, compatibility checks, virtual apps etc.).

They should do quite the opposite, actually. What they currently do is emulate a really crappy graphics card; obviously that's not helping. Actually, what they need to do is find a way to pass the GPU calls as transparent as possible, to the host machine's GPU. But this opens up a lot of problems, so I assume that's why it hasn't been implemented yet.

Ok, something freaky is going on with this OS. I've installed 7 yesterday, used orbit's loader thingy and it went swell for while. Until suddenly it just freezes on the black Windows Loading screen. That animation keeps running but the HDD LED stops flashing and nothing happens. So after a reset and running this repair wizard I manage to restore and load windows again, but then it happens again after another restart. It seems kind of random...
Anyone have any ideas?

Several of my Nic/Wireless cards just dont work with Windows 7. After much google searching, it appears my FA310TX Netgear Nic card is not supported in Windows 7 (only XP). I also cant get my US Robotics 54G wifi card to work in it.
I dont know. It seems like the same old story. New OS, your old parts wont work no more. Ill stick with XP until I become rich to update everything else.

Well, for the parts you mentioned the latest driver is from 2003 (pre XP SP2).
But seriously, these network parts are the cheapest in any PC, you can get twice as fast versions of them for ~$15 + ~$25 (gigabit lan, 108Mbps wifi).
I've got a ~5 year old Realtek card that works with windows 7 without installing any drivers for it.

I was wondering, I have an old PC (Pentium 4 2.4ghz, 1gig ram, 7600gt) at home and I would like to install windows 7 instead of XP. The problem is that the motherboard drivers (Asus p4s8x) are available for XP only and not even vista. What can be done? Can vista handle XP drivers?

^^ my onboard one works flawless with windows 7, i have a netgear NIC on my other networked machine to the router and that works as well.

I've got a P5K Pro yet there are no drivers for it, so you're not alone, but it doesn't cause any trouble.
Drivers for motherboards usually consist of this: memory controller drivers, on-board chip drivers (sound, lan, wlan, RAID), ACPI drivers.
You can get audio and lan drivers from realtek for your mobo, but SiS doesn't offer any vista/7 drivers, except for RAID. If you're lucky windows will install memory controller drivers (probably), for ACPI you can probably get drivers via windows update. Normally I don't install drivers from windows update but these worked on two PCs so, if you can't get a driver from the manufacturer you can try windows update.

Nah, wait for the proper OEM keys to get leaked (or risk having to reinstall in 120 days ). But using XP over Vista -> look above.

Until MS decides your serial is not genuine anymore. No thanks.
By "or risk having to reinstall in 120 days," I meant him not activating.

I never entered in a product key. Hazors crack still works great! Just ran an update today. Still says permanently activated.
Why are people entering in any keys to begin with?
Under my computer>properties - it does not display a key. It just says windows activation>Windows Activated>Product ID: xxxxxxx (is that the key it made up automatically?!??!)
**Also It found my realtek 8185 wifi card fine. So im over my baby time with it not finding my old nic card. Go Windows 7!!!

You are using the same key as everyone else who has win7 activated, the loader entered the key for you.
