First of all there's barely any piracy on consoles. PS3 has no piracy and 360 has minimal piracy (you can not pirate any downloadable content for 360, which is DLCs, Arcade games, Indie games etc.). I don't count Wii cos it's a toy for housewives and it can die in a fire.
I agree about his comments on hardware.
But then he goes completely off with controls. Console controls are great imo for majority type of games. FPS and RTS are the only genres that suffer a little on consoles control wise. |
There's plenty of Wii, X360 and PS3 games for download if you know where to look. Perhaps there's less piracy on the PS3, but there's definitely some.
As for the controls, yes, they work for RPGs, sports games and certain action games, but said games are always restrained by the outdated control scheme. I'm so used to a mouse-based environment that I just can't understand how console gamers tolerate the absence of such marvelous device.
The lack of a mouse is what makes console RTS and FPS games a joke, and is perhaps the reason why complex games (like, say, Galactic Civilizations II) are so rare on those platforms. Understandably so: I played several Romance of the Three Kingdoms games on SNES and PSX, and navigating through menus with a controller is considerably unwieldly and tiresome. When I played RTKXI on the PC, I was amazed at how easier the good ol' mouse made it to manage things and sift through multiple screens.
But back to subject, there might be a little less piracy on certain consoles, but even on PC it has always been but a small dent to profits. Even if its impact is generally unquantifiable, think about it: companies still make lots of millions. If piracy were such an apocalyptic issue as some claim it to be, given its presence since the dawn of software, it'd have killed gaming as a whole years ago.
But no, it's not much of an issue. It's that companies only just recently realized they can use it as an excuse to justify their greedy actions while the real reasons lie elsewhere. Piracy alone is hardly a valid justification to move an entire company to a different submarket.

I repeat, there is NO piracy on PS3 at all, that console is not hacked, you can't play pirated games on PS3.
Console controls are great. Did you even play anything on a modern console?
Game types that are superior with mouse+kb: FPS, RTS.
Game types that are superior with a controller: Driving, Sports, Platformers, Fighters, 3rd person action games (god of war, wolverine).
Game types that works fine with either mouse+kb or controller (tie): Adventure, RPG (depends on a type really, most of RPGs work perfectly with a controller, only a few selected top down RPGs are better with KB+mouse).

I remember well all the the time spent when i played the arcades, and the console stick is an evolution, not quite as the revolution brought by the mouse. (wii not in question)
But ok dumb down the controller scheme, appease the masses, let the 4 months old nephew play, wathever. Was in that sense.

1) I'm sorry, but I'm still seeing PS3 games on the torrents. A good bunch, too, so they can't all be fakes. Apparently they can be played if you have the necessary programs and the game installed in the console's hard drive.
2) Yes, I have, but control-wise, what is a "modern" console? Controllers haven't majorly changed since the PSX's DualShock. Wii excepted.
3) It's more like this, from my point of view...
- Game types that are superior with mouse+kb: FPS, RTS, 3rd person action games in which aiming is required, basically any game with a moderately complex interface (which is generally accompanied by depth).
- Game types that are superior with a controller: Sports, Driving, some 3rd person action games (the controller's sticks are better in these situations since they can better control directional movement).
- Game types that works fine with either mouse+kb or controller (tie): Adventure, RPG (depends on a type really, most of RPGs work perfectly with a controller, only a few selected top down RPGs are better with KB+mouse), Platformers, Fighters.*
*Controllers might work well in that case, but that doesn't mean they're better (or worse) than the venerated arrow keys or WASD.

There are loads of PS3 games on torrents and usenet and they are genuine, but they are useless for now. The console is not hacked, you can't play them, so they are actually releasing PS3 games "for future", because it would be hard to find those "old" games once the console gets cracked (however Sony is trying like hell to prevent that, frequently releasing new firmware to fix potential security holes).
Present PS3 piracy (and in near future) = nonexistent. Trust us.

which is shooting themselves in their own foot, everyone buys a 360 to mod it, I'd say profit to MS but aren't they losing money with every purchase?

Who, Sony or Microsoft?
For Sony - not anymore. The hardware got cheaper, bluray diodes are not that insanely expensive anymore, they are actually making money of PS3 for about a year or so. Several days ago they released "PS3 Slim", simplified and even cheaper to produce, so it looks like Sony's entertainment division is doing allright.

Why? MS is still replacing modded RROD devices because they can't afford the bad publicity. So WIN-WIN for users.

I'm only at the second level, but I'm really enjoying it. Doesn't matter if it's too linear or it doesn't have AA, Wolfenstein is simply a fun, mindless, oldschool shooter.

I have tried 10 times now and he either does not show up on the block or he freezes, this is either a bad crack or a buggy game undecided which yet though.
