Well, the [then called] UT2 alpha and Doom 3 alpha were pretty epic, especially D3 which is from 2001 (D3 was released from 2004).
Edit: Wait, did you mean full game release before retail?

Yeah I remember Doom 3. it was incredible, mostly because the graphics were so far ahead of it's time.
I think I had a geforce 3 back then and it ran well enough.. the shadows blew me away.
Of course there was not much to actually play, but beeing able to run around in the major areas of the demonstrations that we got to see in videos was just great.

the most famous is probably Half Life 2, where an improbable hacker got into the Valve/Newell intranet to get the game, which was far from being released.

I think Crysis was leaked the day before retail release if I remember correctly.

Seriously, the DOOM 3 thread had to be the worst thread this forum has ever seen.. It was mental. I'm glad I wasnt a mod back then ! In fact, I didn't even use this username |
Hehe, well shame I didn't know about it back then.

That shit was a hoax if i ever seen one... all a big marketing stunt
and when it did come out it was missing half the stuff they showed on videos... the shit they do in this gaming industry is really quite shameless

Micro$oft games used to be leaked regularly much earlier than street date... Fable, Dungeon Siege, Age of Empires 3... all were released like one month earlier...
And the above mentioned Doom3, aside from the alpha, was released one week earlier if I remember correctly, one of the first (if not the very first??) releases by RELOADED.

Only because HL2 was overhyped and it made the fanboys cry...
How to leak a game... or How to delay a game by one year?

Not major, but almost all the NFS games after Underground 1 where leaked early.
Especially Carbon wich was realeased 2 or 2.5 weeks before shipping.
But the one major leaks i remember is HL2, it was cool too run around in the scene's that were shown in the trailers, but at the same time dissapointhing because most it, if not all, was scripted.

I'm here since 2001 or 2002. Wasn't very active on the forum at that time, but was very active on IRC. I remember all the madness around GTA3 and Doom3 releases
