It actually depends on the area. During the parts with Poison Ivy, some area's are sealed until you deal with her.

I used to think the melee combat was pretty easy. But playing the higher level extreme combat challenges, where you have to face 20 guys at the same time, with loads of items in the environment for them to play with (pipes, projectile objects, gun racks!) it's actually challenging just to survive.
It's so much fun countering moves, snapping limbs, throwing punches and kicks all over the place, you really feel like a badass superhero. I must admit it's some of the best combat I've experienced in a game. Especially when playing on hard so you get no countering prompts.

I also started playing last night (my GF downloaded it when it was released and has been playing through it since ), and so far I like it! Kinda agree with wgem on the combat, alteast so far.. It's been like this the whole time - X,X,X,X,X,Y,X,X,X,Y,X,X.. you get the point. But it looks really cool and flows nicely, so it hasn't exactly gotten boring yet
Good game so far, basically!

If you button mash in this game, you're doing it wrong.
You can:
use normal hit
use counter
throw people
use combat takedown
use floor takedown
use batarang
jump iover guys
use cape to blind them
and here's the infamous physx link, so my e-penis grows longer

So in games like, say, Street Fighter IV all you do is Hadoken/Shoryouken all the time? Or maybe just punch/kick, who cares for imaginative combos.
Spoiler: | Nah, just messing with you. I understand your point. |

Like I said, it doesn't force you to do anything. If you want to experiment you can, if you just want to defeat the enemies you can do that with a minimal of button combinations.
A game is all about choice, if you choose to not play it to it's potential then that's your decision. It's like not bothering with any of the Riddler puzzles, I personally think they add a lot to the game. Some people might consider their pursuit boring.
Imagination always improves a game, and a games mechanics should allow you to express your imagination. Thats the reason why some people hated Assassins Creed and others enjoyed it. Some people need to be told what to do, others can imagine their own objectives.

Yeah the combat certainly gets more demanding as you progress, especially when the number and variety of enemies you face at once increases. Facing 20 enemies at once is just mad, you get that in the extreme challenges and towards the end of the game you'll regularly fight more then 10 enemies at a time.

Yep, replaying it on hard and the game is now even better.
Now the fights actually means something. And yeah getting perfect flow racks up the combo = better xp-points, so yeah, fighting is more important than first meets the eye.
Doing all the riddler challenges are fun too. Some seems pretty hard to figure out. Gives it some kind of metroid/castlevania feel also to the game, since one has to come back to places visited before to get some stuff.
