i would strongly recomend a 1gb , purely because if you install bootmii ( highly recomended as it gives you brick protection) u will need at least 500mb on an sd card to back up your Nand via Bootmii

Thanks for the advice! Brick protection sounds like a good idea!

I also just picked up a wii off ebay to give this a try. Are there any restrictions on regions? I.e. Will NTSC iso's run on PAL machines?

For the most part, yeah. I strongly recommend looking around on some homebrew sites and getting an update-blocker first, though. If you accidentally update your Wii with a firmware update from another region; you run the risk of bricking the machine >_<

It's quite awesome to load games off an external hdd
It only took me 40 minutes to set up, and now it's as nice as the old modded xbox.

Any recommended blocker you can just install on the Wii? I did a 10-sec Google peek, and all i found was BrickBlocker, who needed to patch all the ISO's before burning..
Watercooled 5950X | AORUS Master X570 | Asus RTX 3090 TUF Gaming OC | 64Gb RAM | 1Tb 970 Evo Plus + 2Tb 660p | etc etc

I really don't know, mate :-\ This is all coming from memory, so I'm not sure if it all still applies - and what else is needed, or even superseded.

i do not see the point of having an update blocker as you just have to update your wii with waninkoko's modified fw updates. i always have the latest firmware
edit: preloader is what you're searching

Brick blocker is mostly used with people who modded with a chip. With the soft mod as long as you dont try to update through the disc channel yo wont have any problems with bricking. Just load you games with a usb loader and you'll be set.
It's still a good idea to get preloader incase you install a bad wad and accidentally brick the system. Better safe than sorry.
edit: also just noticed that a PAL version of that Beetles Rock Band is out. Go get it.

Ive managed to soft mod the Wii and my games work great from the external USB drive. What Im wondering is can the Wii play backup DVDs. And without the USB drive connected? Ive burnt some ISOs but they dont seem to work and I cant get it them to play with any of my loaders.
May the NFOrce be with you always.

i doubt the backup loaders work with all games, but if serveral backups won't work, maybe it's the dvd brand you're using? for example, my wii won't read verbs, but sony dvd-r work just fine.

Verbatims worked great for me when I used to burn games. just make sure you burn at 2x...
Also I think compatibility is lower for games on disc compared to loading via USB. At this point you are better off loading from USB.

Hmmm 2x you say? I did mine at 16x and 8x lol. And using -R Verbatims.
I tried to burn Cooking Mama but it wouldnt read. The disc icon just kept spinning and wouldnt even display the unreadable disc error. I then burnt it again just incase it was a one off and it still wouldnt work. So I burnt Wii Fit and the played straight away and without using any loaders. I then tried Cooking Mama 2 and that also worked fine. Maybe there is something wrong with my Cooking Mama iso or that game just doesnt work from a dvd-r on a soft modded Wii for whatever reason.
I havent tried anymore from dvd -r but all my games work fine from the external usb hard drive.
