honestly I don't get all the praise you guys are giving this game. I never played the ghothic games so maybe that's why I haven't jumped on the bandwagon, but the models are terrible, the combat is OK but nothing special at all. The whole 'feel' of the game to me seemed unfinished/beta-like. Seems like a very mediocre game to me.

Whatever you say, mate. I can name plenty of "mediocre" games and this most certainly isn't one them. No offence, but perhaps you should look up the definition of the word?
=Topic=
Ok guys, I need a pretty rapid answer on this one please - but don't open this spoiler unless you've done the Patty/Romanov side quest!
Spoiler: |
I've found all the Nameless Graves (I'd actually found them even before the quest began ) and now I'm at the penultimate conclusion to the quest arc. Romanov has Patty and his band of brigands are waiting for me outside a cave that has the treasure. Thing is, I have the option of gutting the sea-dog like a fish --- or playing along.
I reallllllllllly want to kill him! Can I do so, then continue the quest *and* save Patty? Or do I have to play along to save her?
|
This is pretty urgent, as I'm there right now and don't want to make a decision until I know the ramifications.

If they are worse, it makes them shitty, not mediocre. This is nowhere near high quality. So if it ain't shitty and ain't high quality, what's left? Mediocre.

Saying it's beta quality is outright stupid or ignorant. You can dislike the game and how the systems work, but calling it beta? no.

Opinion or not, to say this is "nowhere near high quality" is just wrong, however you slice it. What would YOU consider "high quality"? Oblivion?
The voice acting is great, with the only "hammy" voice being the protagonist.
The graphics are great, though distance textures need a lot of work.
The music is great, completely relevant to the game and mood.
The combat is frigging annoying, but ultimately rewarding once you start training and learning more skills.
There are tons and tons of quests, with only a very few being "go here, kill this, come back" types.
The play-length is spectacular (46hrs now, loving every minute)
I'm sorry, I respect you and all mate - but if you consider this to be mediocre or "low quality" - then I truly shudder to think what you would consider "high" and I honestly wonder just how high your standards must be

I agree that it's mediocre. I just play it because I'm a sucker for exploration type games.

Nah, calling this game beta isn't right, I agree there. But it's his opinion, no need to " " at him for having a different opinion than you.

Yeah, and this is mine.
Graphics are good, voice acting is good and music is good. Yay. Gears of War had these as well, so it's a good game?
The rest (story, combat, gameplay, etc) for me are just mediocre.
Also on topic of "graphics are good", animation and models are just HORRID. AWFUL. But that's shared between all the Gothic titles, so it's OK.

haha dude, i didn't post my opinion to pick a fight. i guess i was just let down by the game. BUT I think your statement is a little dramatic, things like jumping and then floating like you're on the moon are what led to my "beta" remark. Agreed no game ships without bugs, but I don't think my remark was unfounded. I've already seen advocates of the game admit to its faults or bugs, so just because you like the game doesn't mean you have to take it personally when someone else doesn't.

You're right, should be called alpha. Beta is for fixing bugs, not creating content (animations are content).

LOL!
@Vro
I'm just messing with ya mate. Read back a few pages, believe me; I was fucking LIVID at the game initially. The combat had me nerd-raging as hard as Cedge. It was quite embarrassing >_>
So far, out of over 40hrs gameplay, I've encountered a grand total of two bugs; two NPCs got stuck in a piece of scenery (pathfinding bugs suck) but a quick bash to the head with my sword knocked them out of it, so they could continue on their merry way.
Floaty jumps, while a bit silly, I don't consider beta/alpha material - and PhysX implementation is typically shit, as it always is, with a handful of enemies doing the spastic dance when you kill them; morphing into random shapes and flying 50ft up into the air

Not personally no, but your argument that theres 'floaty jumps' constitutes beta software is flawed.
Because all games, even all software, have some odd thing which shouldn't be there. That doesn't mean they're beta, and this isn't a beta version either. Version number and overall quality and optimization says that it isn't a beta.
If you still believe it's beta, then you don't have any idea what beta software is, which is what I initially tried to communicate in not so detailed terms.

That's always been the case with the Gothic series, its either a love it or hate it type game it seems. I'm in the love side, but I can understand someone not being able to get into it as well.
As far as the models, I have to agree that the Human models aren't all that great but I think the critters and monsters look pretty good. I like how the Gnomes jump up and down and their belt bags flop all over.
Also love some of the environments and atmosphere. I walked into the Eastern swamp yesterday at night and storming like crazy and with the ground fog it just had this eerie feeling to it.

Found a berserker sword, 80 damage and two handed, not much that can withstand such a blow. exploring the area really pays of.
Spoiler: |
Path from Jan's house but not to the swamp but the temple ruins behind it and the cave complex within, past that and down the narrow cliff path and up to the jungle near a large waterfall, past another ruin and finally a bridge above the previous waterfall where another watefall is located, into the waterfall and past the cave complex and up to a temple, sword is lying near a pillar there, close to a barrier.

Spoiler: | first you have to go to the smnith and talk him into giving you the "worst sword of something worse blabla, then talk to aric, but careful, if you make any suggestions about his skills etc, he will fight you, so reload and select the other option instead, until you get the option to give him the fireflush, after that, he is easy as can be |
