As much as I'd love to cheer... I won't. Firstly, I strongly doubt the accuracy and validity of that article (nVidia have been leaders for years and even when they weren't leading, they were equals, so I strongly doubt they're just "giving up" like that) but secondly, and of absolute importance; if they give in, we all lose.

ATi are pricing their new 5-series cards so aggressively because they have powerful competition. If nVidia drop out of the mid/high end market, which I doubt, then ATi will be the only serious GPU manufacturer (Intel's Larabee not withstanding) and they will be free to charge whatever they want, without making forward pushes in innovation.

I dislike nVidia's business practices and I positively despise their TWIMTBP program - but to lose them completely? This can only be bad for all those concerned :-\

It's his opinion and nothing more. He gives no sources beside his own past articles.

Everyone is pointing to his article as source. I'm pretty sure that this information were it true would be posted on frontpages of a lot of tech websites with independent sources. And maybe nVidia would make an official press statement as well.

IF his opinion is true then this is very bad news as Sabin said.

i think its logic that they EOL the GTX series in november when the GT300 cards are coming out. and only keep the GT200 ones for the low-mid end

It would defy logic to EOL those products so quickly. The 9 series and even some 8 series are still not legacy and readily available direct from Nvidia.

To completely eliminate the most recent generation would be unprecedented.

I loled while reading that article...
but ATI isn`t pricing their new 5 Series so "low" because of the competition - they have non! The 5870 is by far the fastest single core card on the market, and even faster than gtx295 in some benchmarks.
The thing is, ATI can manufacture at much lower costs than NVidia. That`s NVidias Problem!

Nvidia has been selling the 200's at a loss for a while now anyway... so it's not really a stretch to think they want to stop doing so. But if you don't have something else to sell then what are you going to do?

Most popular OS.. Win XP 32bit.. 53%!
Most popular RAM 2GB 33%!

Old data is old and has no affect on future sales and earnings. The bulk of steams Nvidia users are still using 8 series GPUs...

Well I meant old data as in that sales data is old. It's not indicative of current or future trends and in fact if you dig deeper it shows the opposite. Radeon 4800's are second behind 8800s by only 1%.

8800s are years old while 4800s are relatively brand new.

Did you stop reading there? Looks like it.

The #1 card on Steam is the 8800 series. Now tell me how many fucking 8800s do you think have been purchased in the last 2 years? Zero? That's about right because they haven't made them in that long.

Now look at the #2 card, barely 1% behind the extremely popular 8800 series.. what is it? That's right.. the brand new Radeon 4800 series!

I have my 8800 for about 3 years now, don't need to buy it since everything still works on it. What's the point of buying the card if it's not bottlenecking you? Laughing

Nvidia just makes cards that last long(of course apart from the renamed old cards shit, but if you're more intelligent than a seagull you can figure it out), and while the newest Radeon is pretty fucking awesome, Nvidia will come with her own counterpart soon enough. Besides, just look at the chart:

Nvidia: 65,38% , ATI:27,26.

And those old cards give Nvidia zero money, which is the issue. Nvidia has been losing a ton of money this year and selling 200s at a loss.. and the 300 looks to be putting them in even worse shape.

Meanwhile ATI is raking it in since the 4800s and Nvidia's marketshare is slipping. One of the main reasons behind the PhysX bullshit imo.

Laughing Look at the chart better, if you like to boast about nVidia's market control with 8400s and 8200Ms, then have fun Laughing (BTW, it's the same with ATI, surveys like this are bullcrap).

Also, about the money losing, remember that many partners left nVidia when the GT200 line first came XFX among them, which was one of the largest nVidia partner. That's why they had to lower prices so much.

And you can get a 4650 for what? $55-60? I'd take a 4650 over an 8400 any day of the week Laughing

Exactly! And look at the price. Less than sixty bucks, which is scary good - whereas the 9600GT is closer to $90!

I don't want nVidia to leave, not really, as we need the competition in order to keep prices low and technology fresh - but they've done the same shit for years; priced themselves into oblivion.

Nvidia actually KICKED their partners.. claiming it was to reduce 'confusion' but I'd guess it was more to put a stranglehold on the remaining ones.

I want to see how Intel will shake things up. AMD and ATI are in huge debts (billions), so future is not bright for them either.

As I said (I can't believe I have to keep repeating myself just in case people rag on me for being a "fanboy"); We need nVidia. We need proper competition for ATi, we need the tech and price wars .. but if this article is true (and nobody has stepped forward to refute it yet........) then they really do only have themselves to blame :\ Weaker, yet more expensive, hardware which they reportedly sell at a loss anyway!

Unless the GTX-380 really brings some insane power to the table, at a price friendly to manufacturer and customer alike, then I honestly don't see how they're going to survive passed this generation.

I'm hoping Larrabee makes it out this coming year. I can gladly make do with my 4890 until then.
