Hi,

All of the anti-virus releases on Usenet contain viruses, or don't work properly (as far as I could find).

Having just got mega let down by AVG (got a fucking nasty virus which it let me run), I'm now on the hunt for something better.

Just wondered what your opinions on AV were? I've just been trying Avast but since installing the machine has frozen / crashed 4 times .... so now going to try Avira AntiVir... which i've read is the best free AV / Anti-spyware!

Well my vote goes for Avast, it's never given me any issues and works flawlessly - as well as being incredibly light on resources. However! Turns out Microsoft's Security Essentials is getting rave reviews right now - and is completely free too.

Just tried installing it on my XP laptop, and it tells me I need to validate my copy. Apparently my warez XP copy isn't genuine. Shame, I tried running the WGA updater and it didn't work.

Anyway, I will try it on Vista upstairs.

Hmmmm Mad Didn't think about that, yeah, it's a problem with XP. But there might be a solution with WGA cracks - not sure about that. With Vista/7 all cracks are virtually genuine, so shouldn't be a problem there. Smile

and the Microsoft essentials thing: does it also have a better firewall included or would one need something like commodo installed anyhow?

The Vista/7 firewall is quite advanced actually, so an additional firewall is not really needed. XPSP2 one is bad, but they really did good with Vista (and subsequently with 7). Also, because it is done at an operating system level, it is much faster than third-party apps. But with XP you don't really have a choice.

Cheers!

Before switching completely, you can use the W7's installer to split the drive and create a new partition, then you can dual-boot (or if you have another hdd, even better and easier).

Well, to be honest, NOD32 was turning into more and more bloated. The last great version was, what, 2.5? Then with every release it got slower and slower. Sad So MSE is a nice replacement. Smile

Avira or MSE. For example AVG Freeware version doesn't protect you from rootkits at all.

@Sabin

In before someone says

Quote:
Rolling Eyes and if you run osx on it it'll be secure
comparing security percentages does not equal same security Laughing
when it comes to macs vs pcs... percentage mean shit really... Very Happy

im not bashing your results but you can't really look at mac security and then look for pc more scure... and call it pc is more secure because the pc is more protected and the os has better security... that's just silly Very Happy

Laughing <3

Of course not! It's just silly to think that! How dare someone, even a noted Mac security expert (I'll bet he's not considered an expert any more... if he hasn't already been executed, mafia-style Cool Face) suggest that WINDOWS is more secure than OSX Laughing
