mentioned this a few times now with AVG in these forums when it happened to my misses pc.. AVG is utter shite, it warns u then runs it anyhow then tells u again u got a virus that you let past lol.. |

Aye, same here! I once got nailed pretty fucking severely by Vundo - and the only AV to pick it up and trash it, out of every major AV I tried, was Microsoft's OneCare.
You probably had an inactive Vundo virus, not installed but being carried like the plague by an older file. Be thankful, Vundo is nasty

OneCare had a very good AV engine actually, but the overall package was bad. I think MS realized it, and also saw that they are making very little profit from it. So they made a good package (MSE also has support for Malware and Spyware so it disables Windows Defender - that way only one software is doing everything, instead of several separate ones). I think MS has been quite foolish to not release a similar software ages earlier.

In this situation, it didnt even warn, not until i'd run. After running, it starting giving bullshit.
I had one of those infects .exe files, and before long, i couldn't open explorer.exe control.exe or anything else.
Luckily it didn't spread across my network, which it's meant to be able to do.
Had to completely fdisk both hard drives in this machine.
What a fucking cunt!
Also, after resintalling Vista and getting everything back to normal.. i realised i'd installed vista 64bit. Ah well, not going back now!!

The thing about the microsoft anti-virus is that I don't think I trust the same people who wrote the leaky code that leads to the viruses to come up with an antivirus. It sounds great (for MS) to cause the disease and then sell the cure but they're not making any money from the AV as yet.

last time after another update on w7 it installed and after reboot activation was broken, had to use loader again
does same with vista, so yeah it does that pretty good, only that tho, never actually finds any spyware or other shit, talking about mrt btw

i personally never use an AV, slows down PC too much and keeping windows + apps updated and not installing random crap keeps your OS clean.
Now i have years of "experience" with malware in all sorts of ways, you guys might remember my thread to collect all the Email addies of AV companies, i have had contact with the most retarded people this way that i cant believe work for an AV company.
I would sent RAR files packed with like 20 crypters, binders, packers, clients of RATs stealers ..... name it.
of course most of their email servers will only accept certain size of files, or it had to have password protection....
So i uploaded it to my website and just gave them the link , some would honestly reply to me complaining how thats not an acceptable way of submitting virusses.
Some including KAV who i once regarded as the best dared to complain about how 2 out of 25 were already detected by them and i wasted their precious time.
German AV companies were actually the nicest, they would personally respond and say thats fine with them or even give me specific email to reach the right people faster.
Some email addies simply didnt work. some didnt even have emails and had some very tedious one file at a time webform submission.
And then you have those retards who test a client and tell me the file is safe, i have to respond to them and explain them the client is there to make custom servers which are harmful, and that the server might change depending on settings in the client so i figure its better to sent the client.....
It was a mindboggling experience and i quit helping them all, the crypters and packers are the most dangerous as they make pretty much any malware undetected, many of them bypass firewalls unless you have it on custom settings, i regard them as the most dangerous on the net, as they are used and renewed on popular downloads weekly to stay ahead of AV companies, if they would make the stuff i sent them detectable the same day it would chop the gains of the ones using the malware to almost nothing.
Maybe something more relevant to the thread now, there isnt one that stands out enough from the others to be called the winner, and im not talking about features but about the actual known virus database.
AVG / AVIRA / AVAST often detect the recent popular malware alot better than even KAV and NOD32 , ones i advised anyone to use for years, and this is cause AV companies dont really want to to put effort into detecting everything, they dont have a single person actually going through the world wide web in the hunt for malware, they rely 100% on user input, and thats why the most used free AVs have overall a better detection rate as of late, cause of the massive userbase, which is often more "noobish" and this way downloads more crap, which in return gets submitted to those companies.
In the end i advice to install as little as possible on your OS , and use a virtual machine for any crap you do have to execute, and reinstall a fresh OS every few months just for the same of it.

LoL at those choices, the thing is nod32 and KAV do a fantastic job AT AV.,, yes it does some malware stuff/rootkits etc but your probably supposed to back up a very good AV with a very good specific antispy/malware app.. not one combined as a whole package perse'
Installing only what you need from proper sites and being sensible on matters is the best AV though I agree, for us here its prob all fine but for joe bloggs and family it tends to be different..

av companies dont release virii for good reason and those that actually write them also mainly keep em to themselves. If you are not a member of black hat hacker communities it s therefore pretty hard to get virus & trojan dev kits.
