Hey guys, so, I've downlo.... bought some HD movies and put them on my PC, and VLC works and all but on "fast-paced" scenes VLC can't catch up, does anyone know a solution or perhaps even a better mediaplayer to watch HD movies in?

1) System specs? They take a decent computer to run. 720 semi decent but 1080 will do some raping.
Download and install Combined Community Codec Pack, Download and install CoreAVC Pro(uses multithreading, and disreguard leo's hate for it) go into ffdshow video and disable H.264(this stops ffdshow from using it's codec for the video) and use Media center classic
Some other tweaks.

2ghz cpu, 1 gig ram and a geforce 7700 if I remember correctly, watching HD sure looks smoother with your advices stated, but the video seems to not play in sync with the audio

Disable Deblocking in CoreAVC, that seems to help with lag issues, though 2GHz CPU should be able to play 720p content with no problems.
Try using PowerDVD, its codec uses hw acceleration to decrease CPU load (plus it looks better than CoreAVC [I HATE IT  ]).

You still have that problem? I have now managed to play 1080p files on a laptop with Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz! Is your CPU dual core or single core? But at any rate, even a single core should be able to take a 720p quite easily. Answer my question, and we'll see how to proceed.

and I did 720p on a 1.5ghz single core celeron M laptop with 512mb of RAM and integrated graphics ... no reason for poor performance with that cpu...

there's no need to try anything. must be a codec issue if it's not playing correctly. VLC player without any extra codecs plays 720p fine on a shit computer.
no matter what I try to do with any player it always plays smooth. maybe check to see if more than one codec is loading to do the same thing? I once had an issue where both the MPC audio decoder and ac3filter was loading at the same time.

Here is how I achieved my miracle (1080p on a laptop is a miracle  ):
KMP is not fast enough for the task. Use MPC HC and CoreAVC (it's the fastest CPU-based decoder). After installing both, make sure to set the settings like so:
Overlay Mixer is the fastest available (that's what is used in XP, but is deprecated in Vista and 7). It will toggle AERO off (while the player is running), but will play the fastest.
Make sure to disable the two H264 options - we will be using CoreAVC for decoding. (Optionally, you could use AC3Filter for audio decoding, as it is a bit faster than the internal codecs, but it's really a small gain. In that case, make sure to also untick AC3 and DTS from the right list.)
Add the CoreAVC filter and set it as preferred. (Optionally, also add AC3Filter and set it as preferred.)
If you need subtitles, you will need DirectVobSub, because apparently, MPC HC's internal subtitles renderer is not capable in Overlay Mixer. The autoloader variant of DirectVobSub is the one that automatically loads available subtitles (as opposed to the other one, to which you must supply the subtitles file). Add it to the external filters list, and set it to preferred.
This is how I have my CoreAVC set on the laptop.
This is how I have my AC3Filter set on the laptop.
Using these settings, I achieved full 23.976fps playback on a puny laptop, with a 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo (much slower than the desktop variants). You should also see great results.

Horrordee, see my pics. For DXVA, you need to select EVR Custom Pres (in the first pic) and select H264/AVC (DXVA) (in the second pic, the other H264/AVC should be unselected).
But if you are going to try it on a 7600, there is no DXVA on that.

Say I get it working, how can I ensure that Subtitles only play on films when they're meant to? e.g. an english film with a foreign scene... I only want subs on the foreign bit...

Well, this is up to the subtitles. Most properly encoded videos (ie usually not scene, but lately scene is doing OK too in that regard) will include a subtitle file (in the MKV) with only the forced subtitles (for the foreign bits only). If the encoder only included the complete English subtitles, for all dialog, or he didn't include any subtitles at all, it's a problem. You will have to do download a different subtitle file, which will only be for the forced subtitle parts.

Ah i see. Looks like it's going to be a manual process for alot of releases then.
I just downloaded some 1080p trailers, and they look grainy. They don't look as beautiful as i'd expect.
Anything I can do to check the quality of the image is as good as it should be? All my HD videos I think should look better.
Got a 40" Sony 1080p tv :/

Trailers are usually compressed with footage that is midway through production (in order for them to be released in time). Also, in order to allow as many people as possible to see them, on as wider hardware spec range as possible, they are often compressed at low bitrates (lower bitrate - easier to decode).
I suggest you get some 1080p samples, which should give you a general idea of what quality to expect.
If you need subtitles, you can ask me and I will see if I can find some. In one of the HD torrent trackers, people upload subtitles by language (often from DVDs), so I may be able to find what you are looking for.

wow, i've not tried it on my media centre PC but I can already see the difference on my 17" PC screen here!
Not so much between the 720 and 1080p bits at the moment though! Will give it a go now... THANKS AGAIN!
