I mean a hack in the sense of you not wanting the admin to know an activation is missing. If you have a man on the inside, the merrier. Laughing

Lots of activations still available. MAK keys don't get blacklisted that often. If they did all customers (in the thousands) would need to be assigned a new key. Too much hassle for m$. It's best to just activate a fresh install and make an image if you are paranoid. So even if the activations run out you can still update after a format.

Actually each company purchases its own MAK keys, and if a blacklist happens its only for that company that leaked it (like what happened early on with Vista and some big company).

This is the BuildLabEx string in the registry. Actually, the minor build can change with larger patches (and also the major - SP1 for Vista changed the major build from 6000 to 6001).

This is mine: 7600.16385.amd64fre.win7_rtm.090713-1255

He seems to have some other build, which probably mean he has applied some updates that will eventually go toward W7SP1.

amd64fre is the architecture.

Edit: Indeed, these are hotfixes that will find their way to SP1: http://windows7center.com/forums/patches/
Basically, if your Windows 7 works fine, they are not really needed for now, and will eventually be installed anyway.

I have at about 92 installed updates only for the os which i got from zukona's various update packages around the net. And when i checked my build number through regedit it was changed to 7600.20555.
I reckon mostly critical updates have been released through WU by now. There's a bunch that isn't really necessary for the os for the time being as they've not been released. But if you have installed all updates the biuld number is the one that i mentioned above.

There is a difference between hotfixes and updates. Notice that you are no longer on the RTM branch - these GDR and LDR branch releases are untested and not recommended (or otherwise they would have been on WU already).

Quote:
Note that the system will a GDR or LDR minor revision number of 1xxxx is the update is installed as GDR (default), or 2xxxx if itโ€™s installed as LDR or QFE hotfix, which should not applied to most users. GDR (General Distribution Release) and LDR (Limited Distribution Release), which also known as QFE (Quick Fix Engineering) are simply two different maintenance branches maintained at same patch level by Microsoft, although LDR branch is cumulative of all previous patches available. GDR is normally distributed via Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center to improve user experience, and contains software updates that address widespread critical issues, such as security vulnerabilities, and that are broadly released. The fact that Microsoft adds GDR into build string of OS kerner (ntoskrnl.exe) of Windows 7 RTM may signifies that the reliability and stability can still be improved considerably.

Ok. Haven been using the os more than three months now. Works like a charm. And am not afraid of using every new update, hotfix or whatever that pops up.

After having the computer in sleep, is there any way for when waking it up to go straight to the desktop instead of having to log in on my user? I'm the only user on the computer, so it seems a bit unnecessary to have to go there first. Not a big thing, just something that would be nice to have sorted Smile

Well, i've used up all 3 rearm method attempts and now am only 2 days left to activate windows. I don't want to reinstall cause the os is perfect and there's no reason at all to do that. I read somewhere that the rearm method could be extended up to 8 times of usage by editing keys in the registry but it was of no use. Tried it a couple of times and still 2 days remain. So is there a loader/activator i can use which of course works without any problems? To put it simply, which is the best loader out there?

If i remember correctly, when you get to the part that Windows 7 asks "where" you want to install it, choose "advanced options" or advanced hard drive options or something like that. Then you can format.

Question; lets say you have a pirated copy of Vista with that boot-loader thing-a-ma-jig, and on another partition a copy of XP. What if I wanted to replace XP with Win7 but keep Vista (so I can migrate in my own time)... would that work?... and if so how?

Help appreciated!

If you are using the more recent loaders, there should be no problem. At most, if you get some silly "Activate now" problem, just do a rearm and install a newer loader (this will, if at all, happen after 7 is installed).

The loader in the sticky "FAQ" is updated now and then as well fixing bugs and updating functionality, works pretty well now, unsure if it's the "best" but it's quite good and very well maintained. Smile
(No need to upgrade as such though if it already works and activates the OS.)

I had some doubts about Win7 and decided to try it went with dual-boot with vista and it's pretty snappy, i haven't tried any games yet and no activation or cd-key went well on my self built PC in my sig, it seems to be alot more fluid than vista, glad i tried it.....
