So I'm after the original baldur's gates and was thinking about getting the compilation, but those are usually sloppily done in terms of disks and aren't satisfactory to own. The BGII game box had an awesome 400+ page manual and the likes which im pretty pissed I lost.

So im curious if the packs like these

come with a seperate manual for each or hows it done? Am I better off buying each one individually?

Can't say for sure,but I'm pretty sure it comes with a single manual for both games.
Seems most logical...

Well, I guess I'll just piece them together 1 by 1, I found the CE of Baldur's Gate 2 on amazon for 30 bucks which was supposed to come with a cloth map and all Very Happy Very Happy

Code:

Baldur's Gate II Collectors Edition on the outside looks like a fairly standard game - the only thing that sets it apart from the classic box, is a yellow-gold oval on the front of the box that reads "Collector's Edition" and a number on the back.

Classically, the words "Collector's Edition" on the front of the box means that there is a toy or something thrown into the box as a marketing ploy (this can be seen with the "collectible" boxes and manual covers for Warcraft III). However, for some reason BGII actually adds more functionality to the game - this is slightly annoying to people who both want to collect the game and keep it in its shrink wrapped package and at the same time play the game.

On the back of the box is a sticker that indicates what number out of the 62,000 made yours is. Inside the box there are:

    * two maps (one cloth, one paper)
    * trading cards depicting various NPCs
    * quick reference card
    * note pad with images from other Black Isle Studios games on it (Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, Fallout 2 and such)
    * a coupon for $10 rebate on Icewind Dale
    * reference manual and troubleshooting guide
    * catalog for other games
    * standard game CDs (on gold reflective)
    * bonus CD

It is this bonus CD that makes the collectors edition worth what it is. This CD has art, portraits, music tracks, and a complete walk-through for the first chapter and an additional merchant in the game named Deidre.

Deidre shows up in the Adventurer's Mart along the Waukeen Promenade who has several magic items from the Planescape: Torment game for sale priced in the "you can get that much money?!" range (from 20,000 gold to 50,000 gold).

The Collectors Edition is only available for the Windows platform, though the bonus CD that came with it was available for Macintosh if the game was pre-ordered through MacPlay - it does not come as part of the standard game for Macintosh.

Sucks cause it's going to be shrink wrapped. I used to have the original tourment cd's years ago but I wasn't a PC gamer back then and didn't get teh whole concept of it so I lent to a budyd of mine (got it in perfect condition from a garage sale) and he lost it, now years later...it's a collectable...pisses me off

I remember the original Baldurs Gate came in a cardboard booklet (as opposed to the chunky plastic case of the sequel) and I lost it up in the attic somewhere. Super-pissed about that myself.

More likely it'll be a digitized .pdf

Collectable you say...that pisses me off even more.

What Ispep said.

I have the European version of the BG collection and it only has on-disk manuals.

Maybe it's different with the US version seeing as many games in the US still get released as 'big box' instead of the standard DVD packaging in the EU.

I haven't seen a "big box" release since, pff I can't even remember, the biggest the get is what you saw for HL2, FEAR, Guild Wars etc, but even now we get standard DVD cases in a small box, I think the best example of that would be the witcher EE or Demigod CE

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

they're collectable to me, some of the greates nostalgia i have, as for the collectors edition, that was released years ago, nothing new, if it's worth something in the future or not, doens't matter to me Razz.

As for tourment tho, yes, it's very collectible, as is vampire blood lines and I believe deus ex is getting there as well.

Out of all those old bioware games the only one I kept the jewelcase was for BG2. I still have the CDs of BG1-2, Torment and IWD, but I've long since converted copies into a DVD for a streamlined install.

Hell, I've actually got a rar on my storage drive with an integrated game of BG1+TotSC+BG2+ToB.

You guys want a treat for Baldur's Gate, Check out the Big World Installer It combines hundreds of mods into Baldur's Gate I & II (modifying BG1 to run on Baldur's Gate 2 engine, making both games merge into one huge story) as well as all the other mods adding hundreds of hours of additional stories & plots to the game... its really worth checking out if your a Baldur's Gate fan.

*oops, I guess someone already mentioned it Smile

** just a warning though, it takes about 8-10hrs for the game to compile if you pick lots of mods -- even the standard choice set --- its monsterous -- makes BG about 16-20gigs...

I actually got a badly pressed disk when I bought this way back when. Disk 4 of BG was bad, so I got there and couldn't continue. I had to send the disk back and they sent me a new one. I had serious withdrawal symptoms for the couple weeks that took.

Same thing happened to me. Bad last cd on BG2, corrupted area file for scene where last fight was. By a number of weird cirumstances I ended finishing game almost a year later.

a bit off topic...
a while ago there was a thread around for an indie game I think that looked very similar to baldur's gate. does anyone remember that? I lost track of it and am wondering what became of it.

hmm nope unfortunately neither one of those 2 is the one I'm looking for. Graphics wise, inquisitor is pretty close though.
The thread I'm looking for must be much older. It's been a year at least since I last saw it. Sad

it had 2d graphics like infinity engine stuff and you also had a party if I recall correctly.
aaargh where is it.

-edit

found it! It's called "The Broken Hourglass"

Unfortunately there's still no release date. I was hoping it came out while I wasn't looking Smile

for me I think it took about 6-8 hours total as well. the downloading took the most time, as it will only download one mod at a time and the servers for the big ones were pretty slow. Downloading a 450mb mod at 100kb/sec takes quite a while.

Nice, Spykez. BG2 is a truly awesome game that deserves a collector's edition :-)

BG2 was actually the game that brought me into all the infinity engine games. I only played the first game later when I decided to replay from the very beginning.
The oddest thing is, I didn't even buy it myself!
I was still in school when it came out, and a friend of mine came to me one day with BG2 in his hands and asked me if I wanted to borrow it. He had bought it but didn't like it.

Oh thank god he came to me with it... the game totally blew me away and I bought it off him a few days later and wondered how he could not like such an awesome game.
baldur's gate forever!!!
