Russian publisher's site says that updated release time is Q1 2010.

Stalker is OKAY but, i'm sorry - i did a mistake. The RPG/open-world features are poor in stalker, i mean "poor" - not bad but poor.
Yes, i would like to get something more like COD4 in the post-apocalypse. A fast pure action .

Oh, I know about "z", trust me, but in some instances a "d" is used as well. There are a lot of people originally from Russia (and previously, CCCP), a lot my friends also, so my accent imitation is somewhat accurate. Laughing

Arrrrrr!

Many former GSC developers are supposedly working with this, including the guy who initially coded the deferred renderer of the xRay engine in the first Stalker title, or that's what I've read atleast, game looks promising but we'll have to wait and see how it turns out I guess, screens don't really say much about the gameplay. Smile
(It looks good however and it's very atmospheric.)

Ag.ru had an interview with Dmitry Glukhovski, he wrote the book that game is based upon. The interview is in Russian, so bellow I summarized the key game ralated points.

- Team started to do concept work on a game during 2003-2004, back when they still were working at GSC. Andrey Prokhorov contacted Dmitry, saying that they want to leave GSC to start an independent project and they need a book material to base game upon. At that time there was no printed book, just a draft of the first edition at free hosting site. Real work on a game started around 2006-2007, when a 4A Games were formed.

- Main quest is based on a book

- Game will be pretty much linear. But Dmitry wish it would have been as a good old Fallout 1 & 2 with a huge world to explore.

- English version won't be simply translation from Russian to English. THQ hired a Hollywood screenwriters and tasked them to adopt dialogs from English version of the book into a game.

- English voice acting will be done by American actors with Russian roots. Dmitry Glukhovski said: "There won't be idiotic pseudo-Russian accents by some random Polaks, instead it will be a natural residual accent like in people that lived a few years in USA. Sometimes I think, maybe it would have been best with no accent at all, just a pure American English, but it was a THQ decision as the story takes place in Moscow, they wanted to make it clear that all characters are Russians"

Second part of interview is up. This time with developers.

Here is the summary:
  • Game is linear story-driven shooter.

  • Some of the events from the book got cut as it was inappropriate to implement them in a shooter. Around 60% of the book's events are still in game.

  • Players can't go postal in settlements and shoot everything that moves as there are women and children living in there.

  • There were plans to allow player to invade hostile subway stations and in case of danger all peaceful NPCs would simply run off to "cover" level inaccessible to the player, but that was hard to achieve and devs decided to cut that feature and polish other areas of the game instead.

  • Unused AK47 bullets made before the war are used as money. Most of time player will be shooting from ad-hoc guns

  • There are 10 types of weapons in game.

  • Weapons can be upgraded in shops - optics, silencers and bayonet. Revolver has most of the upgrade options and ultimately could be upgraded into cavalry carbine(?!)

  • There are 5 slots for weapons

    • knife
    • pistol
    • pre-war weapon (AK47, maybe others )
    • ad-hoc weapon ( shotguns, crossbows, air guns, etc.)
    • grenades

  • During the game player will visit ~10 subway stations.

  • Levels are linear, player can only choose on how to complete them - rush thru them guns-blazing or a more stealth approach. For ultimate stealth experience players are encouraged to buy special gear and use silenced weapons. Surface levels offers a little bit more of freedom.

  • Filters for the breathing mask needs to be changed from time to time and breathing mask could get damaged during combat.

  • Game will have a Call of Duty alike health regen system for lesser wounds. Heavy wounds could only be treated with medkits.

  • Devs mention vehicles in underground levels - draisines, motocycles, armored car, machine gun turret and Nazi tank(?!) although it's unclear whatever they are usable or only accesible during transition from subway station to another.

  • There will be a lot of music in game and it will not be limited to dark ambient.

  • While visiting stations player can rent a hooker and bet in rat races.

  • Game will be around 10-12 hours long. Devs say they complete it in around 6 hours.

  • No multiplayer.

  • PS3 version is uncertain, decision lays in THQ's marketing department hands.

  • PC version will feature nVidia PhysX effects and DirectX 10 support.

  • Game feature fully dynamic lighting and all light sources can be destroyed in game, later especially useful during stealth approach.

  • Player can't drag dead enemies, but alive enemies react to dead bodies.

  • After being shown a life demonstation of the game a year ago, THQ were disappointed - game wasn't action oriented enough. There were no firefights in the first hour of the game as devs wanted to present the world lore to the player in peaceful manier. It took both sides another six months to reach compromise. As a result loading screens were added between levels explaining basic story to players whom prefer guns-blazing approach.

Nice, unsure how the "shooter" aspect will affect the book and story (Haven't read them though.) but it seems similar to MW 2 in a way with a somewhat shorter but more focused and structured playtrough, lack of MP is a bit of a downer for some I imagine but if it gives a good SP experience it's worth it. Smile

EDIT: Kinda like Call of Pripyat compared to the first Stalker game in a way.
(Smaller but more focused, although there's a lot of content in Pripyat anyway, heh.)

@WhiteBarbarian

Thanks man! That sounds great, it really does. I'm all for open-structured games, but sometimes it's just nice to jump into a linear story-driven shooter instead.

A little bit too "driven", but it's definitely too early to judge it from the very first minutes of gameplay. Anyway, I repeat, it looks gorgeous Smile

These "paid" hands-on reviews are useless.

Also :

Quote:
Appropriately, the PC version is being held up as a flagship offering by NVIDIA, with PhysX support promising to provide a more believable physics system and physically driven animation.

Didn't read the review Very Happy

I hate enemies that don't react to damage ! Worst thing about Doom 3 ! But even Crysis ragdoll looks like bullshit. Seems animator talent is harder than canned game tools tech.

Same crappy ragdoll in the Brink videos.
