|
 |
Everyone remembers this, right?
Quote: |
Datel’s expressed “disappointment” at Microsoft’s decision to disallow use of third-party 360 memory units in the console’s November software update.
“We are following this issue and awaiting the outcome like everyone else,” a rep told CVG.
“If the Major Nelson blog is to be taken at face value then we’re disappointed to see that Microsoft are taking these steps to prevent customers from exercising their freedom of choice.“Everyone is looking for ways to make their cash go further at the moment and we believe that Max Memory offers a good value, high capacity, alternative to the official Memory Unit.
”Major Nelson said earlier this week that only Microsoft memory units will be supported after the update goes live.

And...

If you are using an unofficial memory unit with your Xbox 360 then you had better back up your data onto an authorised Microsoft 360 storage device quick sharp, as the next 360 update will shut-out third party devices from working with your console.
The new update is set to add a range of new features to your Microsoft console, including Last.fm, Facebook, Twitter and more.
Xbox Live's Major Nelson blogs: "When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you've moved your profile or saved games onto one to "back it up," you'd better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update.
"If you continue to use an unauthorised Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games."
If you want to know more about officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com

Well Datel has had enough, it seems. They've since announced they are pursuing legal action and currently in the process of suing the megacorp.
Quote: |
Datel’s taking Microsoft to court over the fact it blocked third-party 360 memory units in its last title update.
“The dashboard update is intended to, and does in fact, disable Datel’s memory cards,” said the company in the lawsuit, filed in US District Court for the Northern District of California.
“On information and belief, Microsoft’s purpose in disabling Datel’s memory cards is to prevent consumers from choosing a Datel product that offers far better value for the price. There is no benefit to consumers from Microsoft’s decision to target and disable Datel memory cards. To the contrary, Microsoft’s actions will leave approximately 50,000 consumers with useless memory cards (and without the ability to access their data on the cards), forestall innovation, and deprive future consumers of the benefits of competition.”
You can read the full suit here, should you feel the need.

It's typical MS behaviour, to be honest. Lock out the competition - something they've been hit with millions of dollars in fines over. They NEVER learn, do they? I'm also wondering if they ban your machine for using custom HDDs too (Pay £30 for a 120GB HDD, or pay £70? I know what I'd rather do - and worse is that you can only get the 250GB HDD if you buy an entirely new machine!! That's preposterous)

MS uses special goldplated HDD drives, that's the reason for the higher price.

Anti-compatitive ?
Its their console, their OS... I dont see why others should have access to something you created and continuesly support via Live etc.
Besides there is lots of competition between MS, Sony and Nintendo atm. Which is probably part of what the problem for MS. Bet they want a larger part of the cake then they are getting atm from these 3rd party companies that create the memory things for the various consoles.

Dm242, so when you buy windows, you'd be happy only to install Microsoft software on it then? And only use Microsoft keyboard / mice?

On a Xbox/xbox360 they can do as they wish, as the hardware is done by them and the OS for a very specific thing. Also lets not forget that consoles are made to be "simple" to use.
Im not entirely sure why they would try to lock other companies out of making "addons" outside the fact that they dont like the income they get from them or want the market for themselves.
|
I know many of you are banned and probably hate MS now but unfortunatelly yes that's how it works. If you want to sell memory cards for Xbox360 you must buy the license from MS first (looks like MS doesn't want to sell it to anyone anyway). If you think this is unfair, make your own console, then do as you please

I have had a 360 since release and a PS3 and have grown to get use to Microsoft's"independence" if you will that if we don't make it or approve it you can't use it where my PS3 is like my PC mostly plug n play, that's the way Microsoft has always been..apparently Datel has it's issues and among the fines Microsoft won't change, unless the courts say they have too....
