The year is 2025. The optimism and harmony of the 2010s were completely eradicated by 2020. A global crisis loomed. Food shortages sparked riots, currencies plummeted, fuel reserves dwindled, and oil-producing nations began to ration what remained. It is a dark future. Governments earmarked money for humanitarian efforts, overseas security, and intelligence services which, over time, found its way the coffers of a small group of Private Military Companies. These three private armies (Valor, Raven, and S.V.E.R.) then began to recruit aggressively. Soldiers without a country, the contractors fight wars that never happened. This is the nature of the Shadow War.
From the award-winning developer, Zipper Interactive, comes the next evolution in gaming -- MAG. A first-person, online-only shooter, MAG lets you experience battles with up to 256 real people across a global battlefield. Players join one of three PMCs fighting each other in a shadow war and can either become skilled operatives or rank up to eventually command their private army to victory. Featuring unprecedented online action of a scale never before devised with player controlled strategic assets such as calling in air strikes, mortar barrages and parachute insertions; the persistent Shadow War in MAG keeps players coming back for more.
I'm more interested in the 256 player battle more than anything. Its going to be a mad house.
From the E3 gameplay vids it looked like 256 players are scattered in small squads on a big map. In reality it's like 10vs10 players combat and on top of that it looks pretty ugly and laggy. Even in BF2 you can have 64 players raping one control point without any slow down or lag. I'm still interested to see how this game turns out, but I'm skeptical.
Looked a little ambitious without the polish. The interface was very, very busy for example and it didn't seem to have a well designed sense of aesthetic. Big battles are great when they work (World War II Online, Operation Flashpoint) but if it's just going to be Battlefield x10 with none of the polish or definition.... well I dunno, it's not grabbing me.
I would not buy this game on the promise of big battles alone, they need to do something more than that.
Yeah, a lot of games have been pushed from the winter 09 mark to q1 10 because of the heavy hitters of this year. It's a smart move for the publishers, but a bad move for us "honest buying" gamers.
Do you mean Ghost Recon 4 (GRAW + GRAW2 considered officially as GR3)?
And do you hope for the company? Otherwise, a month is more than enough for two games, as big as they might be.
Ya, Ghost Recon 4. It's confusing since they have changed the name. Some say it's 3 and some say it's 4. Anyway you understood which one i was talking about.
As for the company i am neutral. I am looking more forward to ghost recon then mag. True that 256 is something new but join operations had like 128. And it becomes a burden sometime with so many players.
Look at battlefield 1943. 24 players and very enjoyable. So i have my doubts about the game but at the moment i am neutral.
Yeah, I can agree that a huge amount of players can make everything chaotic (ignoring technical issues, like bandwidth and lag).
Well considering I will not be playing it, I am interested in the technology, and what hoops they are jumping to allow for such impressive talk. If they fake it (for instance, you move through zones, and each zone has this and that number of players), I think it should be really disappointing, considering Sony wants to market this as the ultimate online FPS killer against MS.
If you subscribed to Qore, or just recently subbed for the Sept special, you will get access to the closed beta in Sept. Looking for a source atm, I also heard that in Oct, they will be dong a Open Beta.
Looks a little generic, but I'm hoping this will be none stop action...
Are they still aiming for 256 players? Didn't see more than 5 players on screen at once in that footage. BF2 has "only" 64 players but hot zones with lots of hectic action happen all the time. In MAG it looks like everyone is scattered doing their own thing or whatever.
wtf, they copied the COD experience counter in the middle of the screen. lol In fact, now I look at it again (after recoiling after seeing that) a lot of it looks like COD4... but yeah if it's fun to play I don't think I'll care, still a bit in the meantime though.
Beta Keys.
I have a request to make. If someone is already in the beta or has two US PSN's, can they get a code for my friend? He just bought a ps3 and his PSN account is under 48 hours old so it won't let him get one.

Holy crap, had a pretty damn epic domination (256 players) match. Me and my squad were the only ones defending this one point. It was in a building, so we were just firing out the windows. Pretty much constantly we had bombers overhead, shaking the screen and throwing dirt everywhere.
If they fix the slight fps issues with domination, will buy.
