Way to go defensive!

You are aware of the insane amounts of spam all over by clueless people with clueless crappy antivir saying stuff like "OMZGZ!1 my Norton found a virus in .r17!". Get a proper av or just stfu and assume other people are smart enough to sort their own av software, enough with the spam already.

Great. Just fucking great.

I only get 60+ fps when staring at space and very few objects. Add a station and it drops to 40-something, and add a distant one and it's 30. This is a joke. Tweaking the graphic settings doesn't do much (and I'm running it at 1280x1024!), so I guess it's yet another game that's reminding me my video card is too fucking new to be of any reasonable use.

Is it too fucking new or is it too fucking ATI ?

Check their forums to be sure, maybe you need specific drivers.

No idea, at this point. It's running the 9.11 drivers, the latest ones. There aren't many driver choices for a video card this new, as far as I know.

The game ran somewhat better (+10fps at most) when I overclocked my CPU to 3.1 Ghz, but eventually the PC froze (in a bad overclock fashion) when I was playing Civ4 and the processor's temp was between 45-50 degrees Celsius. I'm pretty sure my 650w PSU is good enough, and I could try updating my motherboard's BIOS (newer version is said to improve overclocking).

Can't seem to catch a break...

ahem, I've got a 5850 bottlenecked by an x2 4400+ 2.8ghz and I never see anything below 50 even with 5 stations by me and in a firefight, this is on 1920x1080 too

Biostar TA790GXA3

one of those onboard hd3300 gfx chipsets? you should have buy a 790FX...

maybe there is the problem, deactivate that onboard shit... dunno how that hybrid xfire works but it wont make a 5850 run any faster.
in my opinion ati 5850 rocks ^^

sry my bad english i hope u understand it.

x-3 is open GL based which means it works much faster on ATI cards, specifically because ATI has excellent support for open GL. If the new ATI cards aren't so friendly with open GL than it could mean you are fucked

also ShadowB you should know that CIV4 is notorious for burning and destroying video cards

Burn them all Adolf

also try the following

-disable core #3 #4 and run the game using only 2 cores
-run in windowed mode
-screw around with open GL settings

if spyke runs it flawless with the same gfx card it means the problem is somewhere else...

i lol´d @ civ4 burning and destoying video cards, bullshit.

anyway, this 790GX motherboard with onboard ati3300 graphics is not the right choice for an ati5850 card...

Civ4 doesn't destroy video cards.

As for my motherboard, why was it a bad choice? I've disabled the onboard video, so that shouldn't matter. The Crossfire support is there for the future.

cause this GX is more designed for energy efficient silent office systems with its onboard ati 3300 gpu and the FX series are made for high end and gaming like your 5850.

with hybrid crossfire i meant the support of the onboard gpu with a pci-e card, but seems to work only with 3450 and 3470 cards. you put the monitor on the onboard stuff and activate crossfire in catalyst. but this doesnt work with your card and wouldnt make sense.

the first GX boards didnt have 2x pci-e and i really dont understand the sense of this design ^^

if u want mail me your dxdiag.txt to have a look at the config Wink

I don't know about the motherboard yet, but I've been reading around and it might be the CPU the one that's acting like a massive anchor. It gets considerably outperformed by dual-cores in the same price range, according to this, which even uses X3TC as an example.

Well it must be something something serious considering how outdated all my shit is. Also I don't think those Athlon II's are really for gaming, there more low budget CPU's

As for my spec.

Asus a8n-sli Premium | AMD Athlong 64 4400+ OC'd 2.8GHz | 4x1024 PC3200 | Sapphire HD 5850 | SATA 3.0gb/s HD's

and yes...that's a socket 939 system

Right, gonna install TC again this weekend - any must have mods/scripts you guys are using? I searched the Egosoft forums and there doesn't seem to be a comm jammer (basically disables the rep hit when attacking a race's ships) for TC like there was for Reunion. Sad

I overclocked my X4 620 to 3.25 Ghz, and the game runs noticeably better, despite occasional stuttering when flying and (most annoyingly) in combat. Got about 25 hours under my belt, which include a single CTD and two rather disheartening hard crashes.

Is the game single or dual-threaded?

Well after buying the game when it came out I finally got around to reading the manual and learning to play. Started off as the humble merchant start. Working on learning the game and earning some credits. Also flying through the hole without a duplex or triplex scanner = sucks.

Yeah after you get some cash it's best to buy those cheap & fast m5 ships and have them automatically scout and plant satellites (= you'll see what happens in the sector all the time, great for trade too) to all sectors for you.

I'm getting tired of this game, and my recent boarding fiascos aren't helping (not to mention the fact you can only save in stations, and things can go sour anytime). You literally spend dozens of game hours training the retards you get out of the barracks, only to let them end up killed while boarding petty M6s. And that happens if they're lucky and actually reach the target, given half the time they just aimlessly drift in space, meaning you generally have to reload and redo the battle all over again.

I'm a patient person, but this is ridiculous. Even with a script that halves training time, it still takes 25 game hours to train a skill from 0 to 5 stars (which even on SETA x10 is still five goddamn real hours).

A lot of the game relies on grinding and slaving yourself to the game (not unlike an MMO) due to poorly-designed game mechanics, and I'm getting fed up with that.

I could never get into the game at all.... not even the first one lol.. No idea why, i just could not gell with it at all as a space combat orientated type game...

It run like butter on my machine always did, both of them.. but it might be i lacked a proper intro to it guide or something, cause what ever i followed to do i was killed outright in most fire fights..

Overall looked a good game i guess, but I found getting into say eve online much easier lol.. and thats saying something...

One save opportunity per insurance purchase or is it something permanent?

There are a lot of help scripts and even cheat scripts which you can use until you get the hang of it. Check the modding section of the X3 forums. Smile

I got a pretty good routine going now. I mainly trade in ore and energy cells for solid profits. Was thinking I should buy another ship and hire someone to trade for me.

Once per insurance, but they are dirt cheap. In the beggining you're trading so dock-saving is not an issue. Once you can afford your first station, buying them is a one-time investment. You buy hundreds of them and you are set for life.

Yeah you really want to get away from trading yourself and on to greater things as soon as possible. I usually start by pirating a few ships and selling and/or outfitting them with the trader software so after training a while as sector traders they can start trading everywhere, across all known sectors (since obviously that's where the best profits are).
