List for Wide Released movies.

10.
Up in the Air

Led by charismatic performances by its three leads, director Jason Reitman delivers a smart blend of humor and emotion with just enough edge for mainstream audiences.

9.
Ponyo

While not Miyazaki's best film, Ponyo is a visually stunning fairy tale that's a sweetly poetic treat for children of all ages.

8.
Zombieland

Wickedly funny and featuring plenty of gore, Zombieland is proof that the zombie subgenre is far from dead.

7.
Coraline

With its vivid stop-motion animation combined with Neil Gaiman's imaginative story, Coraline is a film that's both visually stunning and wondrously entertaining.

6.
Inglourious Basterds

A classic Tarantino genre-blending thrill ride, Inglourious Basterds is violent, unrestrained, and thoroughly entertaining,

5.
District 9

Technically brilliant and emotionally wrenching, District 9 has action, imagination, and all the elements of a thoroughly entertaining science-fiction classic.

4.
Drag Me To Hell

Sam Raimi returns to top form with Drag Me to Hell, a frightening, hilarious, delightfully campy thrill ride.

3.
Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a delightfully funny feast for the eyes with multi-generational appeal -- and it shows Wes Anderson has a knack for animation.

2.
Star Trek

Star Trek reignites a classic franchise with action, humor, a strong story, and brilliant visuals, and will please traditional Trekkies and new fans alike.

1.
Up

Another masterful work of art from Pixar, Up is an exciting, hilarious, and heartfelt adventure impeccably crafted and told with wit and depth.

Inglorious Basterds was boring, Drag me to Hell was meh and Star Trek doesn't deserve the number one spot since it wasn't anything more than a good action movie. Avatar should be on that list too, but I do not share the "OMFG!?" love for it.
What the hell is Ponyo? Never heard of it.

PS. Up was good but "impeccably crafted"? Ok.

Haha, oh these self-proclaimed movie know-it-alls Very Happy

So, enlighten us, what movies should it be? I mean chiv, mentioning Avatar 5 times in the Best movies of 2009 is.. a joke i know, but still.

And remember, this list was only for wide american releases.

The Limited Release Top 10 is:

10. Burma VJ

9. Goodbye Solo

8. Food, Inc.

7. An Education

6. In the Loop

5. The Beaches of Agnes

4. The Cove

3. Afghan Star

2. Anvil! The Story of Anvil

1. The Hurt Locker

With the two lists combined, theyre pretty damn good EXCEPT for two things - it's missing Moon and Watchmen. Moon is ranked high on another list though (Sci-fi) so atleast it didn't go unmentioned.

Avatar I haven't seen yet, so Im making no comment on it.

Wait, what? Scratch Head So Star Trek was just a good action movie, so it doesn't deserve a spot, but Pocahontas in space is somehow different and does deserve a spot? Double standards much? Laughing

Actually, both are completely lackluster in the story, something that ought to automatically disqualify them from any top list (aside from "best effects" etc).

Did you read my post? I said ST doesn't deserve the number ONE spot. As for avatar, even as a big ST fan I can admit Avatar was a better experience.

Avatar is 10th place while Star Trek is 5th. Very Happy

This

While I think Avatar was an epic masterpiece, I seriously cant believe how it can compete story wise with a film like The Hurt Locker. The Academy Awards are overrated though, I prefer Cannes.

Avatar exceeded ST by creating a wonderful planet imo. Sure both were riddled with plotholes and cliches, but Avatar had something extra. As movies both might be average, but both were enjoyable experiences.

The RT are just based on ranking of % positive reviews, nothing more. I don't know why you guys read into them so much. Pretty much everyone at least liked Star Trek (94%), but there were a fair amount of "critics" that didn't like Avatar (82% +ve).

What's also interesting that if the RT awards went by 'Top Critics' only, Avatar would be 3rd (after fantastic mr fox and Up) @ 94% (beating Star Trek which top critics ranking is 92%).

No, actually this list is done by a set number of reviewers who all had one vote. Smile It is written how exactly they did it and how the results were made on the main page.

Quote:
Here's how the Golden Tomato Awards Work

* Limited releases are defined as opening in 500 or less theaters at initial release. Platform releases, movies initially released under 500 theaters but later receiving wider distribution, fall under this definition.
* Foreign releases are defined as non-English language films.
* Each critic from our discrete list gets one vote (as determined by their review), all weighted equally.
* A movie must have 50 or more rated reviews to be considered for domestic categories.
* A movie must have 500 or more user ratings to be considered for the User category.
* Each movie is eligible in only one genre.
* Reviews without ratings are not counted toward the results of the Golden Tomato Awards.
* Because reviews are continually added, manually and otherwise, we have a cutoff date at which new reviews are not counted toward the Golden Tomato awards. This year's cutoff date is 1/1/2010.
* We use a weighted formula (Bayesian) to account for variation in the number of reviews per movie. The winners are determined by the rankings, designated as the "adjusted score", after applying said forumla:
(R ÷ (R+M) × T + (M ÷ (R+M))) × A, with "R" representing the number of rated reviews, "M" the minimum number of reviews needed for a movie to qualify, "T" the Tomatometer score, and "A" the average Tomatometer of all the qualifying movies.

to me that reads that their "vote" is just whether they thought it was positive or negative. so indeed this is based on only on a formula which is really just an adjusted tomato-meter score (adjusting the ranking a bit higher for those movies with more reviews)
