I believe it's like this: New female char = Kaidan lives. New male char = Ashley lives.
I made a new female character, Kaidan was on the ship in the intro. They also asked me later on about Ashley's death.

meh i think ME1 was better...
they stripped a lot of stuff that didnt need to be stripped. my favorite thing to do in ME1 was ride around in the mako and discover a base or underground tunnel or something. yes the mining was kind of tedious but it was fun because you actually explored the terrain of the planet and all. now its like what the fuck? you find a signal, and automatically drop down into the base/whatever....and everything around you is blocked off and you feel confined. its just so fucking linear...
EDIT ^ i've only landed one one planet though and there was seriously nowhere to explore except the base building thing. are all of them the same?
also, unlike most people i liked the loot system. getting a kill was rewarding (especially on a boss dude) because it meant new armor or weapons. now, you find them lying around in places? and there's like 15x less loot?
i mean its a good game but come on...FUCK i was expecting this game to be even more epic.

i also agree they removed almost everything that made the first game great.
leveling lots of skills and powers.
upgrading armor and weapons. searching for new equipment.
ammo system is the worst ever.
i liked the cover system in the first better. just being able to press against the walls not having to push a to duck and cover.
im extremely upset. the first one is one of my faovirite games of all time
i would have rather had mass effect 1.5 then mass effect 2

oh btw guys do you know how to find which planets have side missions? i remember some shit about a white reticule popping up, would it pop up instantaneously when you scan the planet or would you need to scan a certain part of the planet to make the white reticule show up? so far i've scanned like 15 planets and none of them had a white reticule...
thanks

It will tell you there is something when you start scanning a planet.
Then you have to find the spot and launch a probe there. I have only encountered two so far.

Yes you can.
You can also import the ME2 char (after completing it) and start a new game.

Did not play the first ME though... council is alive and I did not import any save game...
well I guess I need to play ME1 after I finish this to understand it all...
Apart from that the game really got me.

It will tell you there is something when you start scanning a planet.
Then you have to find the spot and launch a probe there. I have only encountered two so far. |
to clarify:
when you enter a planet's atmosphere, EDI will tell you that she detected an anomaly.
When you enter Scan mode and start scanning you will hear a transmission. It doesn't matter where on the planet you scan. Then just follow the reticule while scanning. The closer you get to the transmission's source the clearer it will get.
There is nothing other than resources on planets without that.

In the scanner circle is also a white line (indicator) which shows you from which direction the signal is comning from, so you don't need to listen to the signal at all. Just follow the indicator.

I must say I feel a bit annoyed at how they went out of their way to create connections to the first game.
While it's cool to have things come up that are the result of your actions in the first game, it just feels way too forced here.
Like.. all the news stations. All the damn time they tell you how this or that happened just now because of the incident on planet A 2 years ago (your actions in the first game). You'd think they'd let that shit rest after 2 years.
Without spoiling anything, the planet Ilium blew my mind (in a bad way) with how many people you met briefly 2 years ago on the other end of the galaxy show up there at the same time in the same place.
If those people were still where they used to be and you can visit them or maybe send you an email that they're on the citadel and want to talk to you or something then that'd be ok, but for everyone to so conveniently show up wherever you go? Ridiculous
Kinda hurts the immersion.

Surray, question about the emails you receive from previously known characters;
Spoiler: |
Ms Wong, the reporter, sent me an email saying to contact her on Citadel for the interview I promised her. Is that possible or is it just for "atmosphere"?
The only reporter I met on Citadel was the cold-hearted bitch who made me out to be a butcher in the first game, now trying to do it again. I told her to basically go fuck herself.

Hey sabin, good to see you getting into ME2 as well :-)
How you liking it so far?
Unfortunately I'm not sure about your spoiler question. I received it as well but only after my last visit to the citadel.
I'll go there soon probably and will let you know if I find her.
And yeah, that other one really had it coming :P

I went back to Citadel but didn't manage to find anything. I hope it DOES happen in the game, rather than just being for atmosphere. As for the game itself? As much as chagrins me to say it, I'm actually enjoying it a LOT more than I thought I would. 15hrs in and having a blast. I miss stuff from the first game, but meh... at least the overall feel of Mass Effect is still very much present.
Characters, audio, locations, it's all good!

Are you sure? That did not happen for Alenko (I'm doing a PC run), and he in fact has a few choice words for you.

Any news concerning the disc swap? I'm using activate.iso for all games and I'm deeply concerned about swapping from DVD1 to DVD2...
