|
 |
Ok, this has been bugging me for a few days now and I haven't got a goddamn clue what's happening or why, but for the last few days my movies have been stuttering to fuck whenever I'm browsing the net at the same time. Scrolling pages, clicking links, etc all cause the film to hitch and hiccup for a second. It stops once I stop clicking stuff.
I'm using MPC-HC (x86 1.3.1489, but it also did it on my old 1.2.1008 version too. Using the x86 version because I remember having issues on the older x64 ones) on Win7-x64. I know for damned sure it's not my proc (E7200 @ 3.6Ghz) so what the hell is it?
=Edit=
NVM. I think I just figured it out! I opened up taskmanager whilst I was playing/browsing, just to see if clicking links caused CPU spikes. It did, but only on the 2nd core (Core1) - so, on a whim, decided to check to make sure Chrome was running on both cores.
Don't ask me how because I sure as fuck don't know, but Chrome was only running on Core1. Grrrrrr. Set the affinity back to both and now the stutter has gone
=Edit=
.... FML? I just checked and EVERY SINGLE application loaded is set to run on Core1 only. How in the goddamn hell did THAT happen!?

affinity is inherited from parent
so if you for one reason or another set a process to cpu1 and then launched chrome and mpc from it (like by opening .avi or .html files) they will be on cpu1 aswell
have you run any apps that might claim 'optimization' or such nonsense? or done any deeper compatibility mode stuff that might try to counteract multiprocessing bugs?

No, I never use that snake-oil bullshit. I knew about the parent affinity, but the thing is; EVERY process was set to Core1 only, and not both cores. I checked each and every one, it didn't matter what it was, it was set to Core1 only.
Damned weird :/

Did you by mistake put the Explorer process to 1 affinity?

one way i can think of by 'accident' would be to use a hacked together compatibility patch like they have for older games made by some cowboy who didn't know what he was doing
fixes the game and everything still works.. mostly...

I'm having the same problem the last couple of days
I just putted on a different player... i normally also use MP HC 64b.... and it improved a bit.
Funny that i see your post now cause i didnt pay really attention it but now i read this maybe it's a windows update whats fucking up
My computer got 2 upgrades the last couple of days....
Edit ... off course i didnt read you edit before i posted
Checked my processes and all on single core .... weird.
I'm also using w7 64b and my computer runs 24/7 ... the only thing what restarted my computer twice the last couple of days where the windows updates (still forgot that option off). Restarting my computer now to see if it's still single core
Edit 2 Lol... problem gone ... it has to do with the windows updates or my windows doesnt wake up that well after it fall asleep.
Let me know Sabin if you used the updates or using the sleep mode a lot cause i would like to know the cause.
Empty again

Same thing here! I JUST had a critical Windows update day before yesterday, I didn't reboot for a while, and had that weird 1core only thing. After a reboot, it was gone and everything was back to normal.
So yeah, the only thing I can think of - because it happened to BOTH of us (too goddamn coincidental) was the Windows updates.

I have Windows Update pending a restart for 3 days now. No problems.
Even encoded a video in the morning. 100% CPU.

When all else fails, do the usual. Reinstall Windows.

What bugs is me is that I can't find anyone else via Google that is having the same issue. Why on earth would Windows, seemingly at completely random times, suddenly set each and every process to use only one core.
The only thing I can think of is that one of my cores is dying, but if that was the case; surely the machine would be exhibiting some sort of issues? :\

No, because sadly the game crashes if you alt-tab (it taskswitches just fine, but going BACK to it gives nothing but a black screen with a flickering mouse cursor)

German and Russian coders mate, they SERIOUSLY screw shit up. They make great games, but absolutely SUCK at the execution and coding. No biggie, I'm about 2 maybe 3 hours off finishing the game anyway =)

Yes, it's the multicore "patch" I'm using. It increased framerate by about 5-10, depending on the scene ... and yes, I tried it without the hack too and still got the Core1 glitch.
