Its like legalised spyware.
Sorry but if a wanted a content delivery system and a system checking all my files and sending the data back to its masters...i would bloody well ask for it.
This whole thing is a scam to sidetrack users into this 'content delivery system' i dont want it, it stinks.
I should be able to d/l patches and burn them onto CDS as per normal, not be relying on logging on the net and upgrading through steampile every time. This is just another excuse to market their software by constantly shoving it at you via steam offers.
In short, fuck them, im not buying HL2 until its a standalone app which funtions properly and is fully updatable WITHOUT steam.
I am not shelling out £40 just for the joy of becoming a happy member of the Valva marketing club, fuck that,
Id rather pass on it and play the other titles which dont require beings sucked into some shithole content system.
I dont even register my games, i dont think its anyones fucking business who I am or what games I buy. Double fucked if I am being tied eternally to the great valve titty with forced accounts and the shit that goes with it just because they feel like it.
Get a grip valve, steam should ahve been an option not a requirement.

I already own several
Just not HL2 and from playing it once its not THAT big a loss. Greatly overhyped. Deathly linear corridor style gameplay, much closer to Serious Sam than HL1 imho.
Was ok, but not a classic I dont think. The one thing that was good was the weapon at the end once you could pickup and throw people.
Originally the grav gun was able to pick everything up on a beam, but I guess they couldnt blance teh game with that and opted for the nerfed and highly dull versionn which was no more than force push and pul equivalents...
I definately made the right choice in buying DOOM3, maybe not a unique gameplay, but it chose direct horror shooter as its style and it did that with a complete mastery of the form and was a really fucking excellent title. Scared the unholy c rap out of me repeatedly, looked awesome, sounded aweseome and was generally a great experience to play.
So really, HL2 isnt a loss. I still think someday Hl2 will come out as a standalone fully patched budget title, then I will buy it when its steampile free.

Lol, there were like 2 or 3 things that scared me in Doom3 and those were when those imps, would stand behind a door and you would open it up and they would jump on you 0-sec. Only that was truely scary, but in a shocking kind of way, didn't really find it Horror. Last game i really remember playing in fear was Resident Evil: Remake.

I am having problems with the Vengeance release.....I have seen this question one other place, but did not see an answer to it, if it was answered around here, I am sorry for asking again, but it's a pain to search every thread looking for something that seems very rare.
Anyways, I run the hl2.exe file to allow me to play in offline mode, I start the game, and I can play it, until it goes to load another part of the level, once it loads, it brings this up ...
ramfiles/valve/steam/steamapps/user/halflife 2/hl2.exe
that's all it says, I am not sure what is wrong with it, I can load the game up again, and go back and play the next part, but when the game loads every two or three minutes, it's a pain in the ass...and not even worth it at all.
This is the dvd Vengeance release by the way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
Added....
I downloaded the Eporium release, and pretty much the same thing happens, but it now says updating node graphics, that isn't the problem though, as another window pops up saying something else is wrong, I tried to get the window up again, but it dissapears for some reason, so I get the window, but can't read what it says to even put it on here.
Either way, it seems as though my computer doesn't like the loading process of the game.
If anyone has a fix for this, it would be great, and if anyone would be able to tell me if this will happen if I actually buy the game, because I want this badly, and will buy it either way, but want to play half life 2 right now.

Good news, addon coming up!
Half-Life 2 Addon First Details
Quote: |
In the latest issue of PC Gamer (UK) magazine, Valve Software revealed some details about the upcoming addon for Half-Life 2. Alyx Vance will be a playable character instead of being a NPC. A new weapon, Alyx Gun, will be introduced in the game - it is a combination of pistol, SMG and sniper rifle. The dog will be there too, but, like in the original game, only as a NPC.

On the other hand, I don't think it will be worth paying for this addon as there are many good SP mods coming out.

i really don't think any SP hl mods wet up with the standards of opposing force (which is better than HL in my opinion) i have high hopes for this and i know they will deliver i just hope it's not overpriced and short.

Another award! Yay!
Half-Life 2 Wins Six BAFTA Awards
Quote: |
The British Academy of Film and Television has held its second annual BAFTA games awards this evening in London. BBC News Online is now reporting that Half-Life 2 has won six awards including best game and best online game.
The title, developed by Valve, was released last year to universal acclaim - receiving special praise for its immersive plot and physics engine.
The game also won Baftas for best action adventure, best PC game, art direction and animation.
Of course other titles won a myriad of awards too including Halo 2 that won best Xbox game and Hitman: Contracts with the best music award.
For more information on the BAFTA Games awards click here and see the original article at BBC News here.
Thanks goes to Atari for letting me know about this news so quickly.

And another award...
Half-Life 2 tops the GDC Awards
Quote: |
Valve picked up the most awards at the Game Developers Choice Awards Wednesday night. Gabe Newell gave an Oscar-like statement regarding Half-Life 2 winning awards:
So awards like these are sort of a double-edged sword. On the one hand I think it's recognition for all the work that went into it. And I also think they're a little bit of a message that you guys better not f*** up your next one because we're all going to be watching.
Half-Life 2 won Best Game, Best Character Design, Best Technology, and Best Writing.
