It actually requires much more skill and musical knowledge to play in a technical/melodic death metal band than 99.9% of ALL commercial music out there, and perhaps more than 80% of all non commercial music, no it's not easy listening music, but that only means that it's not accessible for everyone.
Good quality Death Metal can be in a sense compared with Jazz, most people don't like Jazz because the musical structure isn't very appealing to people who aren't used to it, most people enjoy music with the same rhythmic and melodic structures being the main focus of the song, every instrument "bends" to a predetermined simple structure that is repeat all over, it's pretty much a copy paste job.
Death Metal and Jazz, despite being obviously very different genres, have very complex song structures, the rhythmic structure repeats in very few parts of the song, and the instruments are unbound from each other meaning that in many situations it almost feels like you're hearing a song if you focus on an instrument and hearing a very distinct song if you focus on other.
Obviously, most people never get into Death Metal because it just scares them, the guttural screaming vocals, the extremely fast melodies, etc.
People like easy listening music because they like their music simple, they like music to deliver them a sense of rhythm instead of having to consciously focus themselves on finding it.
Saying that Metal is garbage music it's almost as offensive as saying the same about Classical music, Metal is the most complex and orchestrated genre in modern times, the mere fact that it has almost 100 different types between all the sub-genres says it all.
I'm not saying that all Metal is good, of course not, there are bands out there that should be prohibited of playing a musical instrument ever again, but globally it's the best and most complex musical genre presently.

A similar example is American Football. The tactics behind it and the managers do tremendous amounts of work, but still, it is a very dumb sport to me.

That is exactly my motto, although I do not agree with that methodology, shooting people in the head makes a terrible mess, I prefer to strangle them to death, it might require more action on our part, but at least it's clean!
