very happy for you Cartoon. got mine in the post today. my expectations have been exceeded big time, which is nice because i was let down by M2 and Empire. (the vanilla versions, they are awesome after patches/mods.)
the game looks (wow!) and runs great (everything on ultra) and the AI is great -out of the box.
i was literally cheering when I let off my 1st broadside (sea battle) and saw the physics from the blast rock my ship upon the canons firing & then seeing their ship rock upon the cannon ball impact. HUGE improvement over Empire.

ok over all the game is a huge improvement, and i have an ATI card. i don't know if the game uses all the fancy nvidia junk or not. (or care, since i am n ATI user. =P )
(there was no physx during install)

WOW
the mini touches in this game are awesome
Just saw a horse running away with the riders body getting dragged behind it
Saw/heard soldiers talking to each other
Horses/people freaking the fuck out when arty lands near them
Cav men slouching over their horses with the horses running the fuck away
Horses refusing to charge a square and throwing their riders off
Battlefield getting destroyed by artillery
And lots more..
oh and here is a nice little summary i read that sums up what i think
Quote: |
1) I demanded the surrender of a very weakly garrisoned enemy city, unlike all my attempts in ETW it never worked, well it did for NTW and I was quickly prompted with the decision to loot, occupy, or liberate the city, an neat touch.
2) I had a recently conquered city rebel and overthrow my rule. The city was hannover. I quickly realized that I would not be able to take it back right away so I employed diplomacy, I allied with 3 surrounding nations, small ones like saxony, hessen, and oldenburg or something, and got them to join me in a war against Hannover. To my excited amazement, the following turn 2 of them mobilized to attack and one, oldenburg I believe, actually drew the enemy out of the city and apparently was defeated by them. In the process they weakened the garrison and made it easier for me to finish them off.
3) I have been approached several times by other nations to join alliances, join wars, and exchange tech among other things.
4)The smoke effects on the battlefield really add to the immersion, after a hard pitched battle, besides the corpses strewn everywhere that from as far as I have noticed "do not disappear" (BTW congrats to whoever made that thread, you're a champ) along with the pock marked fields from light artillery ( only 6-lb'rs so far so no craters ) it really adds to the sense I get when I just fought a heck of a battle. Can't wait till I see heavy artillery,
5) Speaking of immersion, the new system of portraits really adds to the game. The total war series has always had a strong connection to history and now that there are historic faces (not all are real people) it makes you feel even more immersed.
6)Combat in general seems "just right" finally. I think it seems faster which is good. The first battle I fought I was in awe of the fierceness of a skirmish I zoomed in on. Both units drew close and stopped not more than 50 yards apart and both became enveloped in smoke with the red flash of furious muskets underneath the vail. I thought then, wow they got it right finally. |

Strange as that's how I did it.
Steam command to install the game, start Steam and let it update.
(If needed Steam://Verify/APPID )
Then I just started the EXE directly.
(Steam has to be running of course.)
EDIT: Whoops yeah it's validate, strange though as I'm still playing the game.
By any chance perhaps try to create a Steam_AppID.txt file with the application ID in it, that's the only thing that differs.
(I tried to run it via a loader first but that's the only file that remains as it didn't work.)

This one should be more recent (The one in Razors release should be identical to my previous patch archive as it uses the same updated files not part of the standard content on the game disc but downloaded and updated afterwards.) as it includes those fixes along with better support for for ATI Eyefinity.
(EXE wasn't updated so it's probably some script file for widescreen or something, very minor things I guess.)

I imagine things will be different in some of the upcoming games, Metro for a rather obvious example but probably also AC 2 and Bad Company 2.
(Although at the moment the 5870 is the fastest single GPU card so it might still be faster in comparison to NVIDIA due to that but scaling and SLI should work better.)

And can i play the full empire tw game using the Napoleon game?

Anyone got some triggers? Had some strange things happening:
-Generals dying without being attacked or even in battle
-Unattackable enemy units on the field that were just riding along (they didnt attack either) and couldnt be killed thus inability to complete the battle.
-Not being able to set taxes cuz the entire tax dialogue has disappeared from one save to another

Sorta like EtW 1.5 or something, very refined but also more focused and a bit linear, the "coalition" (Or what it's name was.) campaign sees a few major powers with the rest being unplayable minor nations and overall the fight is very focused around the Napoleon campaign even in the other modes of play.
Not the best explanation perhaps but it does feel like a refined and tweaked version of EtW but not a full sequel to it.
