So this is what I am talking about, UBI is the one with the protection, but you call the legal purchasers fags. (not saying you made the gif of course) but showing it means you agree.
What has the poor legitimate users done that is so bad?

They are the "fags", because in buying it, they are sending a message to Ubisoft that no matter what shit they invent next, they will keep buying it and they are fine with this shit.
csebal: this was just an easy example. ac2 does something else ... you trigger some progress in game like getting into the anus. the game sends the progress to the server. the server now knows that you have have done some progress and if the progress leads into something like a level switch the server send this to the game and a new level will get called.
maybe you should first take a look at the protection before posting something you don't have a clue about ...
Let me translate: "csebal: this was just an easy example. ac2 does something else ... (repeat your previous example, but instead of numbers you now use "apples" and "oranges")"
I understand what you mean (as evidenced by my post in the SH5 thread) Sure i didnt see the "protection" myself, but guess what. After 15+ years of programming experience says i dont have to.
My point is and always was: as long as it runs on your machine, it can be cracked/reverse engineered/emulated, as proven by the countless 'private' MMO servers out there, that pretty much follow the same reverse engineering principle.
Sure it takes longer than to simply remove a well known protection mechanism from an executable. A lot longer in fact. A) it is a new protection so obviously takes more time to figure out than the already known ones, plus B) it uses a server side component which MIGHT require emulation.
You gave me a great opportunity to advertise one of my favorites:

If you do not believe it to be possible, then just look at all the various cracked MMO server projects out there.
This is a good analogy actually (IF Ubi protection really works the way we are speculating it does, ie: parts of the processing is done server/side) and it's why, imho, it is a strong protection scheme: it IS possible to crack it, but nobody would do it sistematically for every ubi game, the amount of time and effort needed would be overwhelming (look at the WOW emulator, it's still not perfect, and it's been in development for years now).
Actually, theres a huge difference between SH5 / AC2 and an MMO. The former are singleplayer games, with most of the game logic handled locally. The amount of information handled by the server is not that much. Most probably only specific mission triggers and such, maybe some extra stuff related to savegames.
Creating an emulator / database might still take quite a lot of effort, but its far from the complexity you have to deal with when you try to reproduce an MMO server, where EVERYTHING except rendering and UI is handled server side.

i`m getting tired of this and starting to seriously consider buying key for 20 euro... don`t have any games on steam maybe someone will buy it from me later too so i won`t spend lot on this
I played AC1 again...I still find the final level to be really awesome. The VA for Altair was really really good and I actually paid more attention to the plot in hopes to understand AC2 much better.
Been getting a incorrect username or password error since I tried running it when I got in from work. Others are having it to. Looks like Ubi have fucked up big time. Again!

I didn't finish AC1 the first time, so I'm currently going thru it as I waited for AC2 to be either cracked or at least available to buy here...
I think I deserve to be beaten by Leo. I've just bought the game. It was 32 euros and they had a 4 month monthly payment option, that option provoked an irresestible urge to buy, I just couldn't resist it : ( Sorry Leo. You may hit me as much as you desire.
I feel like such a wazzock for supporting that drm.

AC1 is actually quite good and almost required to play if you want to get deep in the story for AC2 and AC3 as it's a trilogy.
I completed AC1 again recently and found the game much more enjoyable when I just ignored the repetitive optional quests, but! AC2 is even better Imho, they really managed to fix what was wrong with AC1 put some new stuff in there without breaking the game.
Now, if we could get rid of that Drm I would be REALLY HAPPY
Ps. Can't log into the Ubiserver now.... ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!! I wanna play!!!!!!!
No actually I waited like 5 mins to connect then it launched the game. I've played a little bit. Even on a single core Pentium 4 game runs good at 1440X900 all high except shadows. Sometimes when there are more than 30 people on the screen it a little bit lags but I'm happy with it.
