nah it is evil since you negate the autonomy of a person
if you want to help people you can do that by giving them information so they are capable of making a better or good decision on their own
someone who manipulates makes that decision for the other
then we have to differentiate between reasons behind manipulating:
- help another
- gain something yourself
of course the latter is even more evil

I gain nothing from manipulating someone nor do I make decisions for them. When I manipulate a person, its always to attempt to influence their business decisions, not make those decisions for them. Like I said, the people who I deal with are not stupid. They know most of the time why I am there in that meeting with that suit on and that board full of numbers and pies. They simply have to decide whether what I'm proposing on behalf of my clients/partners is beneficial to their interests.
If I was ever asked to manipulate a person for a reason that I, personally, felt was 'wrong' I would simply walk out immediately and refuse. Life isnt about perfection, its about progress IMO.

Then you do agree that you already decided what their best interest should be and your efforts go into trying to make them see the same light.
Anyway from a more philosophical view it is pretty hard to say where manipulating starts or ends.

well, most of my personal business is web development and charity based. I give to the British heart foundation, too The last thing on my mind is hurting people or manipulating them into making bad decisions.
When you are faced with a problem you must acknowledge it as a threat to your business no matter how big or small.
imagine a wall in front of you. Its built by your competitors business. On the other side of the wall, is success in business.
The morons will use a sledgehammer to bash down the wall in the quickest way possible, uncaring of the mess they make for themselves on the other side. The only outcome of this is chaos and a business that will never really be anything more than cookie cutter or just fail all together. Disregard of respect for competition is the biggest mistake.
The intelligent ones will use a quick fix ladder made from quick fixes and patches to quickly bypass the wall and climb over, leaving the wall in tact. But these people will eventually be faced with another wall down the line, and sooner or later the ladder made of quick fixes and patches wont be able to sustain itself or be tall enough.
The true innovators, the true successful businessmen will see that in reality, the success is an illusion unless they build a bigger, stronger and better wall behind them that overshadows the one in front of them.

I wonder why nForce seems to have a higher percentage of intelligent regulars than any other forum I've been part of... Interesting indeed...

Surely the true successful businessmen are the people already on the other side of the wall
