You mean to say that you haven't died once, not had a single occurrence of a bunch of enemies targeting the party leader and getting a lucky hit, at all in 16hrs? Sir, I scratch my chin at you.

I'd say I have a very good grasp of the combat system by now, but I'm still getting my ass kicked quite often.
The first maybe 15 hours or so were pretty easy going I guess, but I think I died like 9 or 10 times during the last 5 or 6 hours I played (at 24 hours or something now).

chapter 10 gave me the most trouble so far with the battle against
 Spoiler:

I knew what to do but he just killed me anyway (5 times until I got him I think). Sometimes the enemies just attack me so quickly that I go down before I even get a chance to heal. I could of course play it all safe and use sentinels and medics more often, but I prefer to get those 5 star ratings and dish out as much damage as possible.
While I do like the combat, I try to keep the battles as short as possible, and that leaves me open to quick deaths I guess.
But still, even if I were more careful, I wouldn't call it easy by any means. The enemies are ruthless. You get killed in seconds if you're not careful and I don't think it's realistic to be careful at all times Smile

maybe cohen is just lucky Razz

It all reminds me a bit of persona 3 tbh. the difficulty is pretty similar too as far as I can tell. you control 1 character directly, the others are on AI, and the battles are mainly about figuring out the enemies weaknesses and exploiting them. once you do that you'll eventually break through their defenses and make them vulnerable to attack.

with the little difference that here, the character don't shoot themselves in the head every battle Laughing
I should replay Persona 3 or finally get to play 4 :/
Anyway.
Weapon and accessory upgrading has me all dazzled.
Is there a list/chart whatever to see what transforms into what and what's the best? (weapon wise).
Only stuff I could find was for the japanese version and the names don't seem to match.
I presume the official strategy guide has something to that extent?
Will take a look at that.

edit:
Oh, yeah, now I remember. I suppose the only good place for game guides is usenet :/

Funny, that was my easiest boss battle, I had the most trouble with B., last boss of chapter 9. The boss battle difficulty can differ heavily depending on what party setup you use, I found light, snow, hope to be my best combo so far.
especially since hope has all the great protective buffs that i let him cast at the beginning of every boss battle.

weapon-wise you can upgrade whatever wpn you like best for the char.
So if you use the char primary as a COM then wpns with high ATk are nice and the opposite for RAV. Also to consider is, that some wpn have special abilities which can be good or bad. Like early breaks or HP down.

I've just done that fight myself! Great fight, absolutely loved it once I figured out a strategy (COM/SYN/SAB ftw!) I did it under their time, but still not enough for 5-star... grr. ah well, it was a good fight and I enjoyed it =)

Oh and the exp required for each new upgrade is absolutely OBSCENE now. First off; it's 3000 CP for each upgrade on a non-standard role (ie; giving Snow the SYN role costs 3000 CP on all advancements) and now I've expanded to include Lv4 roles, each one is between 3000 and 5000 CP.

WHAT THE FUCK? Urgh. As soon as this game turns into a grindfest, it gets uninstalled and chucked in the fucking bin. This is not an MMO Squeenix, you assholes.

Whatever you say man.

@Topic.

Bahamut fucking rules. He looks great, hits hard, and was - so far- the easiest Eidolon to capture. I was shocked watching his gestalt bar just shoot up so quickly.

You'll have 65 optional missions later, you'll be able to go anywhere/revisit areas and yes it's linear like any other Jrpg on the market

yeah that scared me as well. I'm guessing they're just slowing down the advancement. While everything did get more expensive, the nodes yield drastically more stats in most cases so each node you unlock is important. Much more than at earlier levels where you just take everything and they give you +3 strength or whatever.
encounters give me 2-3k points now so I'm getting one node for every 2 fights. I guess it could be worse.

not sure about the other roles though. They give you barely anything and cost that much, it's just crazy. I don't think I'm gonna touch any of that until I can get craploads of CP more easily.
I was happy when the game told me that I now have the ability to unlock other classes for my characters. Until I checked them out and saw how expensive they are. Who could possibly take advantage of that at such point costs?

The only way I can see myself getting those anytime soon is by grinding for 10 hours.

Limiting the characters like that is pretty lame. Why does the game force me to use characters I don't like to have in my group... I don't get it.
Even if 2 characters have the same goddamn roles they're gonna have drasticaly different abilities so you can't just bring the class, you have to bring the character. I don't like that..but I guess I can bear with it.

Anyway, I'm now at the part where can start doing those c'ieth stone monster hunt missions and there's some enemies around here (chapter 11) that onehit me. Not sure if that's how it's supposed to be or maybe I'm just too weak :P

Yeah, at least it partially balances out. Now it's +15 or +20 Strength/Magic and +100 or +200 HP.. heh. Quite substantial. Still annoyed, as you are, about the cost of expanding other party members into different roles Sad It means I *have* to use Sazh or Vanille if I want decent party buffs, as the cost of giving SYN abilities to, say, Snow or Fang is extremely prohibitive.

There is a spot in the steppe where a bahamut and a tiger like creature fight if you finish them of you get 6600 XP. And you always get a preemptive strike.
Ofc if you don't wanna grind at all you will hardly be able to get the other jobs.
But at chapter 11 the bosses get really hard if you don't invest some time to grind or do the missions.

Yeah.... I predict massive grindage is going to be required for this once you...

 Spoiler:

I just checked out the 360 achievement guide online. Holy hell. "L'Cie Paragon" looks like it's going to be HELL to do (get 5-star in all the side missions) as well as max upgrading EVERY role for EVERY character. Holy shit. If it takes 6000 CP to get an ability at role Lv3, I'm terrified to think what is required for Lv5.

Also, I keep hearing that the final stage of the crystal grid only opens after you beat the last boss. So that means you carry on playing after that!? Urgh.. that's definitely a first for FF.

Ok, SWEET. I think I just found something I'm going to abuse like FUCK for the next hour or so.

King Behemoth. Respawns VERY quickly. Gives 4000CP when you beat him. Has a target time of just over 9 minutes. I beat him in 51s, as long as I wait for him to turn round so I can get a preemptive and fill his stagger bar instantly.

4000CP every 51s? Yes please.

Press square/X (PS3/360) you should see a small red star on the map, that's where the monster is. You can also press the same button again to bring up the mission menu, where you can reread the mission and look up in which area the monster is.

Chapter 11.

 Spoiler:

Get a preemptive strike on him, then he's toast.

I use COM/SYN/SAB combo at first, COM keeps his stagger gauge filled whilst SYN and SAB work on buffing/debuffing. Once that's done, I switch to a RAV/RAV/COM paradigm in order to knock the K.Behemoth into stagger, and then one final switch to COM/COM/COM to finish him off.

Poor bastard never even touches the floor after the first launch Smug

=Edit=

Just to give some kind of impression over how much grinding is really needed for this game; I've been hammering on this Behemoth for WELL over an hour now. 4000CP each time, round it up to 1min per fight, 30s per respawn, even if you round the whole thing up to 2min/4000CP .. then it's still 120,000CP every hour.

120,000CP an hour and I STILL haven't gotten to Lv4 on a single role yet. This is freaking insane.

I hope you mean additional role. As in not one of the 3 each character specializes in.
