I think the game is broken. I really do. The game gives me 10 minutes to beat 3 stupid little dancing penguins, ridiculous mobs that don't even HIT me, yet is now only giving me 1-2m to fight the "mark" mission enemies ... who are all, except for that phantom flan, ludicrously difficult and kick the ever living shit out of me - they always go for the party leader now - and I barely scrape a 3-star.
Seriously, the game is broken to all hell. "L'Cie Paragon: Get 5-star on every mission. 80GS" FUCK YOU.
Also, I don't get preemptive strikes against enemies that are fighting each other any more. Now if I get too close, they INSTANTLY get the exclamation mark above their head and turn to attack me. Then, in the battle itself, ALL enemies attack me and not each other.
I honestly don't know if I'm even going to bother finishing it.

I hope you mean additional role. As in not one of the 3 each character specializes in. |
No, I mean specialised role. I'm STILL working on Lightning's "Commando" lv3 and I've put WAY over 120,000 into it.

Hmm. Might want to just continue the story for now then. I think I'm almost done with chapter 11 and I've got multiple characters @ level 4 in one spec, everyones ATB segment and accessory crystals, and I'm saving CP for when level 5 opens up. I've done little farming. You'll do lots of fighting in chapter 11 so the CP comes in at a nice pace.

Don't grind until you finish the game. This is a waste of time cause you only need to grind to finish some missions, besides you can't unlock lv10 Crystarium until you finish the game anyway.

What parties did/do you use in Gran Pulse for the missions? Damn, still trying to figure out how to kill those Adroa.

you just have to customize your paradigms. you can create whatever paradigms you want, the maximum number is always 6 and you'll have 3 default paradigms whenever you switch your group. when you go to the paradigm menu you have customize, generate, delete and battle team. just go to generate to let the game generate paradigms for you of select customize to create them yourself and set your default paradigm with square.
about the walkthrough, I'd say as you have to pay for it, posting it for download is illegal so you might want to remove that link again. not 100% sure though.
btw I just read that getting low scores on battles increases the chance for a shroud item thingy to drop. you know, the ones like Deceptisol that guarantees an ambush and shit. Apparently, getting a 0 star rating gives you an 8x chance to receive an item of that type.
I always wondered why I only found like 3 or 4 in the whole 25 hours I played so far.
I guess I'm just too good ^_^

I think they were pretty easy to stagger. You definitely want to get lucky and not have them summon some uber monster so you'll have to be quick...
Maybe try an eidolon as they're good with aoe.
I don't really remember any specifics as they didn't give me much trouble I believe.

How do you achieve high star ratings?
Sometimes I beat the time 10-20 sec and get 0-2 stars O.o (on normal "random" enemies that is).
And one time I was 10 seconds over the target time but still got 5 stars. Are the time and star not related or what?
I'm in chapter 5 btw.

HOLY SHIT!!
Uhhhh, ok.. I guess I'll come back to THAT boss then >_> Found a huge boss in the mines, the same sort of one you had a minigame with earlier in the game. Dude has over 1.3m HP and hits like a fucking sledgehammer! All my team have got over 3000 HP now, but one of his attacks knocks off almost 2/3 of that. I slugged it out for AGES, got him down to around 300k and what does the fucker do? Some superpowerfulkickyourass special that insta-KOs my party leader.
*sigh*
=Edit=
All characters now have Lv4 in their three primary roles ... that was a horrible slog to get that. Oh and Hecatoncheir was THE hardest Eidolon so far. That fucker took one hell of a beating before he yielded.

This game fucking blows, its boring as fuck, the character dialogue and annoying voice overs piss me off. This has got to be the worst Final fantasy game I ever played.
I hate the fact that bosses and enemies must be fought a certain way in order for you to beat them. Pretty much everyone who plays this game has to fight the same way, there is no sense of freedom in battles in terms of making choices.
I'm about 11 hours into the game Disc 2. I keep playing because I am hoping it gets better. But this truly is the worst FF game I played. And I have been playing FF games for 20 years. This is the least enjoyable one. We waited 5 years for this shit?
For those who are beyond the 20 hr mark. Does the game get fun at some point? Or can I expect the same bullshit? Reading everyone's replies, it seems like everyone is more annoyed with the game then enjoying it.

You shouldn't have to suffer through 20+ hours of something just to get to the potentially good part. I say quit now if that's how you feel. I'm an hour and a half into the game and I'm bored of it already. There's no way in hell that I'll be able to go through the motions for so long with no proof that it'll actually turn into something that I'm going to enjoy.

To be honest, the only reason I'm still playing is because I enjoy the story and the music.

The story? So far yes. The music? At times. To me the battle music just doesn't sound like FF battle music :/
short question that I just thought of.
Do you ever get down to Pulse itself or is the whole game based inside Cocoon?

Yep, Chapter 10 onwards is Gran Pulse. If you want a serious challenge, you'll find it there.. make no mistake.

lol @ the too easy comments. It becomes really challenging later on. Some even say it's one of the tougher FF games towards the end.

That's why I LOL'd mate. This is, without a shadow of a doubt, THE hardest FF title so far. Bar none.

I am 40 odd hours into VIII, and my wife is about 20 into X at the moment
I do now have XIII sat on the side at home (borrowed it from another long time FF fan who is bored of it) I just havent got around to putting the disk in yet, I still have VIII to finish
Seems pricey for 80 notes though, I picked up my PS2 slim from cash converters for 20 notes a few months ago and the games go for next to nowt now

yeah I never had so much trouble in any final fantasy game before...
was just fighting the chapter 11 boss and oh boy he kicked my ass. lol
I finally took him down on my third try at 23 minutes (target time 20 minutes) but it was just really really hard, he almost had me several times.
Now if someone says this game isn't hard enough for them personally because they like brutally hard games then that's ok, I'm sure there's harder games out there, but for final fantasy standards it's just insane, because they're usually easy enough.
I haven't died so much since demon's souls.
