|
 |
Ive had my 32GB 3GS for just over 6 months now and on Monday it was involved in a water submersion incident! I am totally distraught and the air was blue for a couple of days after.
It was only under the water for a split second but there wasnt much I could do for it at the time. I immediately turned it off and dried it as best I could.
An hour after getting back from work where the accident occurred, I tried the phone. The backlight flickered and went off and the only sound I could get from it was through the headphones. Everything else seemed to work ok. I turned it off again and Googled the best solution which involved sealing it with silica gel or rice. I didnt have any silica gel so I used rice. I left it overnight.
The next morning, the sound was working through both the speakers and headphones but it didnt sound quite as good as I remembered it. The backlight was still not working.
I went to town and acquired silica gel, sealed it again and stored it in the airing cupboard.
This morning and its exactly the same. The only issue appears to be the backlight. It doesnt work at all and I can barely see what is on the screen.
Im pretty sure its fucked and sealing it for more days will do nothing more.
My next step is to goto o2 and go through the insurance route. Ive read that Apple dont cover water damage but I have o2 premier insurance, which on my initial contract includes insurance for water damage.
The phone is jailbroken and Im unsure as to whether this would void my warranty. I have a feeling it would. To this end I am attempting to run a system restore on the device before contacting o2.
Is there anything more I can do? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
May the NFOrce be with you always.

Wooooooo.
I did not read the rest of the post after this, but here is your first mistake.
I think you should have submerged your phone in rice or something for at least 24 hours.
Right now I'd say you're on the right track... get it back to stock and take advantage of that insurance... Once you turn it on once and fry something, it's all over.
Good luck man.

My blackberry gets dunked fairly often. I resurrected it three times now simply by leaving it on top of my cable box for a few days.

Yup, i wait 2 - 3 days for wet electronics becasue the "trying it to see if it works" probably damaged it.
Good luck with the warranty claim, i would just restore it, becasue odds are when you get it back it will
A. Be a different phone with a newer bootrom
or
B. They will upgrade you to the new firmware before you get it back.

Thanks for the replies guys. If I can get the phone repaired under warranty, Ive already thought that its going to be returned with newer firmware and that my jailbroke status will be well and truly out of the window for hopefully not forever!
Currently the phone is stuck on the apple logo which I can barely see due to the lack of a backlight! Ive hard reset it and forced it into recovery mode but its trying to update to 3.1.3 when I connect to iTunes. Im currently downloading 3.01 and hopefully I can install that.
Id just like to point out that it didnt fall in the toilet and it didnt fall in a pint of beer lol.

Go down the insurance route mate. That's what you've paid for. Just tell them you dunked it in water and now it won't turn on. They'll do fuck all with it past what you've tried, and will end up replacing it. Free new phone - can't be a bad thing.
Good lcuk!

Good luck. Yea, on site swap would be awesome. Probably have to ship it out, and wait "Up to Six weeks" . Good to hear you got it restored.

Got the new phone and replying to the thread on it! I was expecting the newest 3.1.3 firmware but the phone came with 3.1.2. I think I can do a tethered jailbreak with Blackra1n but should the phone turn off, reboot or the battery die, I'd have to run Blackra1n again. Is that my only jailbreak option?

You need to check what bootrom you have. Firmware means squat. If your new 3Gs was built before oct 2009, you probably have the old bootrom.
If its a 3G, you can just jailbreak it as you used to.
3.1.2 doesn't mean its a tethered jailbreak. It all depends on the bootrom your phone is running.
Dont hold your breath for a new jail break. I have heard that those in the know, are waiting for any new exploit releases until firmware 4.0 is out with the ipad.

Ok I have the new iboot. I think it was 359.3.2. I have jailbroke the phone and two installations from Cydia required me to reboot the phone and both times I had to rerun Blackra1n. Its a minor pain in the ass but the pros of jailbreaking (Infiniboard totally rocks) still far outweigh the cons. I do have a rechargable battery case which helps extend the battery life but Ill just have to keep an eye on it and try not to install any reboot requiring Cydia downloads whilst being away from home and a pc lol. Ill also have to be aware of the phone crashing which doesnt seem to be an issue at the moment. Even if the Springboard crashes restarting it doesnt require me to run Blackra1n again.
