The problem with HL2's water is that it has nice reflections, but other then that, is crap. It ALWAYS looks like calm sunrise water.

Sigh.. people forget that the nicest looking water doesn't make it "best." I bet HL2 could have blown everything away if they decided to make it look like a tropical paradise, like Farcry. But the fact is that HL2's water is the most realistic, and people seem to miss that fact.

Most realistic? When I look at farcry and HL2, Farcry's seems much better looking from above AND below the surface. Lots of games could have made their water to look better, whats your point? We are comparing whats what.

Huge waves or tiny waves. It will eat a shitload of resources, but man I cant wait untill that becomes a reality |
Pacific Fighters (IL-2 engine ahoy) does this, though you do need to ramp up the water detail to see it. Makes use of Pixel Shader 3.0, and it's damn impressive, even though most of the time you're high enough that the water is just pretty - hard to make out wave action. Playing with the camera can lead to surprising payoffs, with this in mind. And of course, you need a good system to be able to enable it without killing your framerate.
I still remember when I bought a brand-new Geforce 4400, barely a month on the shelf, and loaded up the Nvidia Tidepool tech demo. Even today I get the giggles at the memory of playing with that thing. Tech demos usually have the best water, afraid to say. The best everything. But they're just tech demos. I have many gigs worth of them, though, for when I want to sodomize my eyes

Oddmaker - It wasn't my screenshot. It was taken from a test where they comparised DirectX 7, 8, 9. That screenshot was taken from DX 9 with a top of the line card. I've also seen people play the game with X800XT's on max settings and I wasn't impressed either.

Yeah, just needs some shorline work, and some more rough water work, and it will be pretty good. Runs great to, and the guys that coded it coded it in a way where its not very optimised. So there is much room for improvement.

Of what? The d3 water?
http://cratematch.doom3reference.com/water.zip
Run it for yourself. Load the water mod, then type "map water" in the console. Sadly the test map for the water isnt the cool one you see there, its this little map, but you still get the general feel for it. Read the readme file if you want to make a basic map to test it some more. There is also a command which you must type to get some certain effect to work with the water, but I dont know what it is.

Huh? Whats your point? The water is the water is the water. The only reason the 3dmark05 water looks so good, is because the surrounding enviroment in 3dmark05 looks so good.
