You don't need to uninstall anything. Just extract the ISO, run it from the HDD, and when you install on the same drive Vista is, it will move all the Vista files to C:\Windows.OLD, which you can delete later. Of course, it requires a lot of HDD space, but that way files don't get deleted accidentally. Smile
If you install a BIE release, make sure to use the loader in guide to uninstall the loader that comes with BIE and then install the one with the loader. Smile
And you want x64, not x86. Wink

Why are you using Bitdefender? Windows 7 works well with Microsoft Security Essential..for free..I also had my windows update like 20 files, no issues.

I never use System Restore. I always deactivate it. Any issues I have, I just format and reinstall.

I was using Microsoft Security Essentials after listening to all the hype here, but then I went and had a look at test results which compared it to other AV, the results were pretty bad, even if they have improved slightly since the rebranding. Plus I forget who but at the time even a MS representative said that it should only be used if you do not already have an AV or IS suite... ie as a last resort.

+ tons of false alarms for cracks, patches and keygens. I can recommend ESET NOD. Not free but top if it comes to performance, detection and false alarms and not bloated like others.

I determined every single Anti-Virus program sucks and should never be paid for. Ive used tons of them and always seem to get one that can not be removed. Its so funny, I started keeping a log of when I do re-installs. See below.

03/19/2010 Using MS Essential Security- (resulted in format and re-install of Windows 7)
Infected with: Trojan.Win32.DNSChanger.kqk

10/31/09 Using ESET NOD 4 (resulted in format and upgrade to Windows 7 from XP)
Infected with Trojan Windefence32.exe

Using an AV does not mean you do not have to care about anything anymore If you continuously have an infected system you are seriously doing something wrong. Its like blaming the doctor for being sick. AV should help you to PREVENT being infected.

Dam, you could really do with getting a new PC, unless that isn't your main computer?

Loader (In the "sticky" thread above.) updated from 1.7.7 to 1.7.9

Changes since 1.7.7

* 1.7.8 -- Fixed loader file padding issue that caused some systems to fail to boot into Windows
* 1.7.8 -- Fixed Windows Server 2008 R2 support
* 1.7.8 -- Fixed loader pointer issues (For when each OS needs it's own active partition exclusive while other primaries are set to hidden)
* 1.7.8 -- Added an option to set the boot menu timeout
* 1.7.8 -- Added an option to install the loader without changing your systems MBR (Good for Linux users & FirstDefense-ISR)
* 1.7.8 -- Added support for Haier, Hasee, HCL, Jooyon, NEC, Tongfang and Viliv
* 1.7.8 -- Added various new OEM SLP serials
* 1.7.8 -- Blocked title version modifications
* 1.7.8 -- Cleaned up some code for better performance (May help fix the rare partition finder error)

Latest - 1.7.9

* Fixed a bug that caused an error on non-english systems
* Added an option to disable the loaders random file padding (Use this if you get stuck in a reboot loop and can't access GRUB)

just installed win7 ultimate x86 using the newst loader.

the installation was easy enough and haven't come across any problem.

my question is what exactly should i look out for in the future to make sure it stays fine?

keep using the newest loader or is a reformat necessary for when MS decides to release a fix etc.?

Don't take all the updates just because they are there, only tick the ones that affect the software that you actually have installed is the best way to go Wink

I've been using the MSDN updates (They're updates as v2 and so sometimes but usually hit Microsoft Update or their hotfix request site as is later on.) and none of them minus that activation security update have any effect on loaders and similar and even so later version loaders will work with that update as well. Smile
(Somewhere around 300 updates now, mostly security related and various hotfixes but some enhancements and additions as well, will be part of SP1 once it's released later this year, beta available but not really recommended, uninstall and reinstall when updated and such.)

EDIT: Also for some reason Security Essentials finds updates nearly twice a day now.
(Disabled auto updated but it's visible from the Windows Update utility in the control panel.)

EDIT: Daz's loader appears to be in 1.8 beta 2 stage, should be ready soon apparently.

EDIT: Info about most, but not all, of the released updates and hotfixes.
http://kbupdate.info/windows-7-2010-04.php
(Solves a whole lot of problems which is why I'm using most of them.)

I'm getting kinda pissed with my Win 7 Ultimate now. I was running framerate comparisons with Fraps, playing games on both XP and Win7 and checking the performance differences.
Everyone keeps saying that Win7 performs the same as WinXP but thats clearly not the case on my system.
I tested the following games: Assassin's Creed 1, Borderlands, Mass Effect 2, DiRT 2 and Metro 2033. All in their DX9 versions and with the same quality settings in the NVidia control panel and in-game and in all those cases the framerate is exactly between 5 and 12 FPS less on Win7. I did comparisons of the most demanding sections of those games and the drops are significant.
AC1: (Masyaf right at the beginning) Win7 - 23fps WinXP - 32fps
Borderlands: (right after getting off Bus, Fov 90) Win7 - 38fps WinXP - 45fps
Mass Effect 2: (Normandy CIC) Win 7 - 43fps WinXP - 55fps
Metro 2033: (first chapter, massive mutant attack) Win 7 - 21fps WinXP - 27fps

I was going to upgrade to x64 anyways so I've got to format and re-install but what shall I do if the problems persist? There's either something wrong on my side or people don't notice the performance drops that are there without a doubt.

Specs:
OS: Win 7 x86 Ultimate/WinXP SP3 x86
Graphics: GTX 275 OC
RAM: 4gb (3gb usable)
CPU: C2D E6600 @ 2.6ghz
