it is explainable - they just want to see how has changed their potential customers list - people who didnt buy games with drm in principle probably would ignore demo(and in future too), or people who ve seen drm in demo wouldn' t play much in it, and they will see it!

Naah, they wouldn't experiment with potential customers, you know that their objective N1 is to get as much money as possible from their game.

Expect next gen consoles to go the same way, especially if the PS3 get's hacked
We will maybe even get it on future handhelds too
Eventually all entertainment could use this crap unless some court somewhere comes through for us

Not too interested in AC2, the first was very dull

| Ubisoft invests a ton in the new DRM. It's a MAJOR marketing step. They want to use it and perhaps even SELL it (=> big sum of gold).

| Pirates know this and even if they find the "hole" in it, they sit tight in their place, knowing that a "crack" released will be followed by a MAJOR which hunt lead by HUGE retribution from Ubi's part. Blood will be shed.

| Crack not out yet and for a while won't show up.

| The next move in this direction will probably be from Ubisoft (remove DRM or make it less painful).

And all this because I find very hard to believe that the system wasn't cracked yet. That is impossible. I bet a solution to crack it exists. The only problem is who and when to release it.

P.S.

I hope I am wrong and crack will be released in 5 minutes.

ofcourse a crack will be released.. but its not a walk in the park.. its a very nasty task to create a crack for a protection like this cause some code is missing and all that need to be logged first.
if they have implement this protection right then this could be as hard to crack as starforce 3 perhaps even harder.. so crack can cost some time.

Am I wrong, or is EA's protection in C&C 4 similar to UBI's drm? And since C&C 4 got cracked, is it unreasonable to expect AC 2 to get cracked soon?

All it takes is one game to be properly cracked and it'll mean the demise of ubisofts posterchild drm .
some easy crack only with file replacing and that creates as any game does a savegame folder in your mydoc.
blackeyedboy is probably right about the retribution thing , but i don't think they'll catch the culprits , BUT they will probably 'punish' legit users from devianting from ubisoft's 'methods'.

anyway , it took a while for SC CS to be properly cracked .. (no unplugging , restricting acess , etc)

bullshit. hahahah What would you call it then? Any system designed to restrict what you can do with the game is DRM. Simple.

As soon as a group properly cracks this it will be released, that's for sure. The "scene" can't release some crappy work around that lets the game play.

To first compare CC4 and SH5/AC2/Etc or Ubisofts approach with EA's the difference is mainly that Ubisoft stores more stuff server side and verifies it whereas EA is mainly about your account and related information so it's easier to bypass like that emulator method available now from what I've understood after all these discussions about it.
(It's complicated and I only get the basics sort of but it's quite a tough protection and unfortunately quite annoying and cumbersome as well.)

Then to compare AC2 and SH5 both can be run but they have various flaws making playing them difficulty or even impossible due to the stuff verified and sent server side not happening when being "offline".

Hopefully a similar workaround can be created even to Ubisofts method and of course EA can always strengthen their own system as well seeing how it kinda failed with C&C4
(Crysis 2 perhaps and so on.)

Why? Because, well, it's a tough one... I don't know... Assassin's Creed 2 CAN and probably WILL produce 1000% more money than Silent Hunter?! Because the AC franchise is worth A LOT more due to higher popularity, accessibility, production values, quality and huge marketing campaigns?!

In conclusion, because it's a godamn goldmine?! Wink

I think every company out there would love nothing more then to catch the pirates.
And I also don't think that pirates care at all how much monney companies invest in DRM.

If a pirate wanted to release some really hot stuff anonymously he could just go to an internet cafe in his town with a stick and upload the crack from there.
Net cafes dont keep a log on people who come there and don't ask for ID's.
There would be no way to trace who has uploaded the crack.

Alternatively a pirate could go with a lap top to any random apartment building and try to see if any one has an unprotected wireless connection.
There are alot of users who dont know how to set one up and connecting to it wouldnt even require a password.

That does not tell us how the PC version fared. Smile There are people for example who bought it anyway, just not on the PC.

I'm not having illusions tho. Most people are all talk when it comes to standing up for themselves, but when it would be required to actually do it, they just back out and fold.

I just noticed, that the article is from 2009. Wasnt the PC version only released recently? Like late february or something?
