Oh man, please someone give me an in-depth review if they play.

I am praying day after day that this next iteration is not another minor rehash, I'm hoping for some major breakthroughs this time.

Please, please, please Koei...

No English subtitles
No English audio
5 new officers (eg. Guan Ping and Cao Pi)
Bunch of new moves and bunch of changed ones
More soldiers to kill than in Dynasty Warriors 4, more like DW3 now
No Create-A-Warrior mode anymore
No Create-A-Bodyguard mode anymore
You only have 1 bodyguard at a time now, they are very unique and pretty powerful, some can heal, others can cast ice spells and freeze enemies, others can spawn you an Attack x2 item,...
You can use your Super 2 Player Musou attack with your Bodyguard in Single Player, but not in 2 Player Co-Op mode
Musou Modes are short, around 6 levels usually, but are much more different for each character now and start at different times
A few minor graphical enhancements but it looks a lot like DW4 and Samurai Warriors
Weapon System is like it was in DW3 again now, so you can have up to 4 weapons at a time for each character and they come with random stats like +5 Health and stuff
Music is more like it was in DW3, less chinese classic instruments

I played and liked all Dynasty Warriors games and liked them all, and I think this one rocks, just as the others.
It's fun, but it's Dynasty Warriors, so you have to expect Dynasty Warriors and not something totally new.

Surray you rule, thanks for the breakdown. A few questions:

Are the new officers any good? What kind of weapons do they have?

How's the AI on the bodyguards this time around? This is what I have always hated every since DW2. In DW3 and DW4 the bodyguards were so dumb. They would run up to enemies, stand around, then circle him for awhile, then chase him around, then circle him again, and finally, after like 5 minutes of nothing, they would attack. And that's IF you don't kill him first.

And it seems the only time they ever do attack anytime useful is against a general and they just steal the last hit and steal all your reward. In DW2 the bodyguards went nuts and slaughtered the heck out of everyone. But in DW3 and DW4 their AI was so dumb they weren't useful at all. The attack/defend/stay commands were pretty useless. I am hoping the new bodyguard in 5 actually does stuff in a timely manner.

And the last major issue... Have you tried 2 player co-op yet? Do enemies right in front of you still disappear like mad and re-appear behind you and slash you to pieces?

The generals are pretty cool actually.
There's one new female (can't remember her name) that the Shu side starts with and she's using a short sword. Pretty fast, not too good with crowd clearing because of that but the moves are pretty cool and it's fun to play.
Guan Ping has a pretty big sword, looks like Cloud's sword in Final Fantasy 7 and has great moves, pretty cool character!
Then there's a new officer on Cao Cao's side (not Cao Pi), who dual wields weapons which look like um.. Halberds. Looks a bit strange but he's really strong.
I didnt see the others in action yet but I'll let you know when I do.

The bodyguards seem to have an AI similar to the General bodyguard AI in the Dynasty Warriors 4 Shura Mode (the one with the random battles).
If you're playing on easy they're quite conservative again, but if you play on hard they kick some serious ass and with their special moves they are really useful.
There are bow bodyguards too who use a special bow attack that fires several rows of 3-5 arrows after another (that is now Huang Zhong's triangle attack, pretty useful now!!) and they rip through hordes of soldiers with that move pretty fast Smile

I did play Coop and the amount of soldiers beeing displayed is (as always) pretty low compared to single player, but it seems to prioritize on the ones closer to you now and I didnt experience any soldiers suddenly appearing behind me in a big battle kicking my ass yet.

I thought kingdom under fire: The crusaders was way better then dynasty warriors in so many ways. Not least the draw distance and amount of enemies on screen at any one time.

They need to combine these two games.

The magician type bodyguards are pretty useful too. Freezes the enemy generals in place which is very important when you're at that last drop of health.
I like the items better in this one too, arrow attack and defense is one single item now, you can also get tiger bodyguards but I've not yet figured out how to get that item.
Ling Tong is very good, use nunchunks(spelling?) with ultra fast speeds.
Theres also this kakusei drop that you can pick up on the battlefield, I think its some kind of invincible thing, press R3 and your attack has more damage/speed and you health doesn't drop.

The co-op side feels the same as the older series. I haven't played co-op much but if I remember correctly, I think co-op for DW3 was better in some way. The frame rates starts dropping once both players gets into a heated battle like the other ones. I don't remember if this is a new thing as I haven't played the previous one for a very long time but I think you can co-op in musou mode now instead of just free mode.
