What a great game!
Everything I love in a rpg, incredible customization as well as a great story and awesome combat.
This game is DEEP.
Luckily, I am not a gfx whore (at least not usually) and find the gfx decent enough for a 7th generation console game, it's the gameplay I yearn for and RoF has it in spades.
Anyone unable to handle steep learning curves should avoid as you'll be disappointed.

Played for another couple hours.
Graphics - as ppl said, nothing special, but it has its "feel". Definetely nowhere close to FFXIII
Story - not much to say, need more play time
Combat - fucking brilliant. I thought FFXIII had great combat, but this, oh boy, it is tactical, it is smart, it is very reawarding and simply FUN.
Exploration - world map exploration is really, really interesting, a mini game of its own. Love it so far.
In general: I will finish FFXIII 1st, 'cause I got like 20h played there already, but I CANNOT wait to come back to RoF. I wonder if it looks the same on PS3...

gametrailers gave it 8.0/10... story not very compelling, very challenging combat, great customization for characters and weapons, and overall just something totally different from every other rpg.

Sounds good, liked the demo they had on the PS3. I put off buying FF13 due to reviews saying how linear it was and the little customization available, now i'm glad I did. Will probably pick this one up instead when it's out on the ps3.

Leaving graphics out of the equation, is the story/gameplay better or worse, and are there lots of mini games and side missions too?
And how does it compare to Tri-Aces last few efforts? |
it's nothing like tri-ace's other games...i'd almost call the combat revolutionary, think "light" tactical combat (like jagged alliance) mixed with matrix style moves plus kinda FF13's stagger system (it works differently, but the result is more or less the same) plus body part targeting. fucking fast-paced at times.
the story is nothing special so far, no final fantasy epic quest...but at least the characters and dialogue are likeable and it feels kinda natural, quite the opposite from the usual jrpgs. |
Bushwacka has described the combat perfectly.

Great, well I've just finished FFXIII myself, so this will probably be my next JRPG as soon as I finish the other hundreds of games that came out this month (exaggeration but you get what I mean).

I played a little further but kept dying at the chapter 1 boss. Yeah gametrailers didn't lie when they said the game gets hard really fast. :/
You can retry the battle if you die for a (small) fee. This is much needed since it seems you can't save during a "dungeon".
I eventually defeated the chapter 1 boss and I'm now in chapter 2 where you can link the same colored overworld hexes to a station to get bonuses applied to the hexes. Sounds pretty cool.
I'm still undecided if I'm going to play any further since I will play GoW3 next when I get it on monday.

Anyone know how to I activate the Terminal after Hughes Power station in Chapter 2. The terminal requires activation, but I don't have any Hexes that could possibly fit. Do the exclamation encounters carry over?

That' right. Although it looks like that the bonus from terminals is effective while you're on a colored hex that's connected to the terminal.
Exclamation encounters? If I remember correctly those are the kill quests taken from the Guild? Those, and all other side quests from the Guild are NOT carried over to the next chapter. You have the option to advance to the next chapter whenever you feel ready. There is also an achievement for completing all the side quests given by the Guild so if you want it, be sure to finish every side quest before you advance to the next chapter.
Now there will be red pulsing hexes but without an exclamation mark. Those are special challenge encounters (from which you can't flee) and they unlock as you advance through chapters but they DO carry over and you can go beat them any time you want.
Also before finishing the game do everything else you want to because there is no post-game, just a new game+ (on normal difficulty everything from your equipment, money, levels, hexes, bestiary, fashion items etc. carries over but on hard only a few things).

1 hour in and I was confused, but now about 6-7 hours later I like it alot.
Story meh (so far), graphics meh, but gameplay and the customization is hell of fun.
And most important it still got that "just one more fight before I stop for the day" and that counts for something to me..

damn can't wait until my ps3 copy finally arrives....
While I do have a modded 360, I like to buy games that I really care about, so I'll have to wait 4 or 5 more days until I can finally play it.
it's gonna be great to have so much customization after ff13

No. It was the terminal after that. There are two terminals that you have access to on your Home Base map - the Hughes one, and the other terminal by the Cafe. I figured it out, but it took a minute.

I guess I'm the only one stupid enough to the point of not being able to finish the tutorial. The Tri-Attack thing. The description is either too short or poorly translated but I can't understand how it works. I run wit 1 char between two others (blue lines intersect), 1 resonance point is granted. But what next? If I press Y nothing happens. Someone please be so kind to explain. Thanks.
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

After you have a resonance point (get it from offensive attacks between the blue line) and the nr 1 or 2 shows above your dudes names in right corner of screen.
You have to stand in a triangle and push the Y button (for Xbox) and your TRI attack mode kicks in. (If you push another button you lose the TRI attack)
Hit Y again if you want to change the direction of the attack. enemies don't need to be in your combining triangle in order to hit them with one... you just need at least one resonance point. And then X button to execute the TRI attack.

Thanks, but I don't get the resonance point idea. I get it when I cross the blue line between two other chars while moving along my own blue line, right? But it usually disappears (the point) few seconds later?
Can you describe it step by step please...?

I think what the tutorial did wrong was show you a tiny distance between the characters, they need to be spaced out wayyyy wider, otherwise the tri-attack is over before you know it..
Basically what they do is to run to the next characters position, when all have moved the tri-attack phase is over. I think you need to fire with all three characters to continue the tutorial.
