ok, a friend gave me his cdkey because he lost the disc, but when i enter it for the Provision release, it says "please reinstall the HL2 Retail Standard Edition"
which scene release is that?
Vengeance? Empirio?

The cd's are promotional glass coasters....you dont need any cd's although some people had a cd check so try it with CD1 of vengeance

what? then how do i get the game with no disc (if i dont get cd1)
do i just uninstall what i have now, and install steam and enter the key?
then it downloads the game for me?

its illegal to exchange eachothers serials. If he played to game he prob. had an account. Which u also need if you wanna play. So you need his account to which is also illegal according steam/valve.
just watch out that your account don't get banned. or else that serial is worthless  |

Hehe, ok. You recently said that he had a cd and lost it...
Anyway If It came with the videocard and he hasn't used it. Just download HL2 from Steam.

Ok why this guy is full of shit...
1. His friend buys a video card that comes with HL2. Only a good video card will come with HL2 (like my Asus Radeon 9800XT TVD) so if he is getting a new video card thats good enough to play HL2, wouldn't he want to keep his code for himself?
2. The free copy of HL2 doesn't come with CDs. It's just a scratch coupon that you enter in Steam that gives you access to download HL2 from Steam.
3. It's not even a CD key, its a coupon code.

1. Dont brac about you'r 9800 good video card, I have a 6800 am I a PIMP now? Maybe he bought Hl2 because he did not wanted to wait 6 weeks. U have to wait like 6 weeks when I use the copoun. So he gave it to his friend, that's called 'social' which I doubt u know when u make love to you'r 9800 XT
