Okay, guys! Need some advice here Wink
Since I'm still on single core CPU..I haven't been able to play many newer games lately, but I want to Laughing
Games like BFBC2, GTA4, Dragon Age, Arkham Asylum and Mafia 2 when it's released.

Right now I have:

mobo: ECS RX480-A Socket 939
cpu: AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1800 MHz
gpu: ATI Radeon x1950pro 256mb
ram: 2x512mb PC3200 DDR SDRAM
hdd: Seagate 160gb, 7200 RPM, SATA
dvd: NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A ATA Device

CPU and RAM are the biggest bottlenecks obviously and new mobo is needed to upgrade them, but would the gfx card be fine for now ?

I wouldn't want to spend more than 450-500 eur so what good choices do I have for a nice quadcore machine? Smile
I can probably keep my old HDD, DVDRW etc right, don't need a complete new set.

thank you for your advice Whirling cane

AMD Phenom II X4 945 = 139
GigaByte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H = 70
GeiL 4 GB DDR3-1333 Kit = 110
ATI Radeon HD5770 1gb = 130-140

all around 450+-10 euro

u don't have to get specific hw but u get the general price etc

make sure your psu is capable

Mortibus' suggestions are good, you can't do much better than that for that money.

I'd suggest getting a Black Edition of the 945 though. Best price I can find for normal one is 130 EUR, BE being 136 so for 6 euros that's a fair amount of extra overclocking potential.

I haven't really been following motherboards that much, so just do some research on that to find one that allows you to overclock well, whilst still being cheap. Videocard wise there just isn't any other viable option right now, definitely get the 5770.

What PSU do you have now? Brand + wattage?

i have corei5, 8 gig ram and a shitty 8800GT. I run games at 1920 max mostly....some slowdowns here and there but im gonna buy new vid card.

My advice: 6gig ram and a corei5 will be enough, not just for a short period. As for vidcard: maybe the new radeons (but you wont have physx then) or wait for nvidia dx11 cards.

when buying the 5770, get the Saphire one with the custom cooling on it ( non vapor x one )

Is the 5770 sufficient for Full HD gaming? (without anti aliasing)

(Crysis, Dirt 2 and so on)

if core i5 is quad then by all means, otherwise get x4, then again i5 will be more expensive and possibly over his budget

crysis well don't expect 60 fps, it would be good if it can keep up 30
dirt 2 if in dx11 mode should be in 40s, also depends on cpu

@ Ampee: NVIDIA DX11 cards are out, and they suck balls.

@ PumpAction: Yes. It's about on par with the GTX 260, just much quieter.

@ Mortibus/madness: i5-750 (which he has probably) is a quad yes, 169ish I believe. It does do a little better than the 945 in CPU-heavy games like Far Cry, so considering he wants to play GTA 4, the i5-750 would be a slightly better choice. Would go towards 500 rather than 450, but still a very solid choice. Heavily threaded applications do better on the i5, the 945 does slightly better in apps where raw CPU power is desired Smile

Yep its quad core.

Another thing: Dont buy core 2 quad (it requires "s775" socket and intel abandoned that line) buy corei5 or i7 instead (if you choose intel line)

Some Chieftec 400W.

Regarding CPU's, are Intel's really worth the extra cash when it comes to gaming ? The difference of Phenom II 945 vs Intel i5 750 is about 50eur over here.

+ the mainboard for intel will be at least 30€ more...

you might want to take a look at the 955 black edition instead of the 945 Smile

In games you won't see much of a difference (except GTA4 but to play that game on high end settings you'll need a Cray). The intels are faster when it comes to rendering and conversion.

Not quite true, the Intels are just faster when it comes to multithreaded apps in general Smile

Obviously that means GTA 4, but Far Cry 2 (or more adequately, its engine) is heavily CPU dependent.

@ madness: That PSU might be stretching it, although most of these components are pretty easy on power consumage. It does seem to do well though, from what I can gather off the web (only a few reviews). If it does as well as the last review I read, it should do just fine, plenty of power to spare even Smile

no but amd might reduce prices on its other chips when its new top end one comes out, 6 cores is much more future proof than 4 cores if you can afford it.
