|
 |
Quote: | Sony Computer Entertainment has said that the latest firmware upgrade will disable the Install Other OS feature of the PlayStation 3, meaning those that upgrade will be unable to run Linux on the home console.
Dropping support for Linux is down to "security concerns" according to Sony. Last month, notorious hacker George Hotz released an exploit for the console, allowing read/write access to the PlayStation 3 via Other OS and Linux.
The PS3 Firmware 3.21 will be released this Thursday, and although users are not forced to upgrade, the console will be unable to access the PlayStation Network and play any games or movies that will take advantage of the new firmware, as well as miss out on future upgrades and features.
The Other OS feature was dropped from the newer PlayStation 3 model by default when it was released last year.
Although no figures are available on how many PS3 users have installed Linux on the PlayStation 3 – and Sony indicates that it's only a small percentage – predictably the official PlayStation blog is being swamped with complaints and disappointment.
According to Eurogamer's Digital Foundry blog, the move is a "pre-emptive strike" against the possibility of the hardware running cracked games in the future.
"In taking such a measure to counter the hack, the logical conclusion is that Sony wants to the limit overall number of PS3s out there potentially capable of running copied games - an extraordinary pre-emptive strike against the possibility of piracy," wrote Richard Leadbetter.
Sony warned that any users that currently run Linux on the console should back-up valuable data on the Other OS partition of the hard drive, as once upgraded to firmware 3.21 they "will not be able to access that data following the update." |

I don't mind... don't want the geek system on my computer, why would I want it on a console.

next time post from official source
http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/03/29/ps3-firmware-3-21-coming-april-1st/
Quote: | PS3 Firmware 3.21 will be available this Thursday. It will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, we’re now removing this feature.
For most of you, this won’t have any impact on how you use your PS3. If you are one of the few who use the “Other OS” feature, or if you belong to an organisation that does, then you can choose not to upgrade your system. However, doing so will mean that the following features will not be available:
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat.
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later.
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings).
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later.
If you currently use the “Other OS” feature and you wish to update to system software 3.21, make sure you back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update. |

Even if you dont install this update you are still forced to install the firmware when a new game comes out with it on the disc.

damn i coulda used that last night when i had to update from 3.10 to 3.15 to play gow3... damn it. it's really not fair that they force a firmware update on you to play a game that you bought.
edit - n/m sony broke that ability in a firmware update long ago. wish i would've known about it.

its getting closer and closer to hacked and Sony know it. I have a feeling GH was closer than he let on, or that he even managed to hack it but didnt release the true outcome. It seems odd he did give up after such a breakthrough..
well only time will tell I guess.

Don't Update
A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

Two things, some people seem to think CFW will enable some sort of piracy. It won't. It'll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn't lose OtherOS support. Hacking isn't about getting what you didn't pay for, it's about making sure you do get what you did.
And this is about more than this feature right now. It's about whether these companies have the right to take away advertised features from a product you purchased. Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether. Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it's the wrong move for the future of the product and the company.

Doesn't removing the ablility to run linux also remove the ability for the rippers to rip PS3 games?
Not that the rips are usefull yet anyway, but if that is the way the still rip PS3 discs then maybe that's why SONY have removed the feature.

I was never bothered about having an hakced ps3 the only thing i wanted is full media support but Ive giv up on that too now and bought the WDTV Live (pretty good) ..Anyways I hope they do hack it now. I mean if this is for real how can it be legal, if it was advertised as having the ability to install linux and they take that way one you've bought it then surely something is no not right there. Is it not like buying a car and then removing part of the engine.. also didnt sony export the ps3 as a computer for tax reasons as another OS could be istalled? Iv read that somewhere but not sure if its true...If it is will they now pay the difference?
