Say on computer u have some pc2700 (333MHz) ram, could you add faster ram(400Mhz) or slower ram(266Mhz) to it, or does it have to be same speed?

If you put ram that is faster then your MB will support it will downclock to the max speed it can support. If you already have slow ram installed and install a high speed chip with it, the high speed one will slow down to equal the slow one...
so don't buy ram of higher speeds unless you plan to replace your old ram. It will be a waste.

So if on a computer you have a stick of DDR400 and you put in an old stick of DDR266, would that increase performance (more ram) or decraese performance (much slowere speed0 ??

If you have a DDR266 stick, and you put in the DDR400 one, it will run at the speed of the slowest stick i.e. 266 in this case. This would be a waste, cos you might as well put in a 266 one instead of 400, and get the same speed. But of course the performance will increase, since you have more ram installed.
However, there are several other conditions, that must be met (e.g. same density, same DRAM technology, same bus width etc) and others that should be, but don't have to be met to achive optimal perforcmance. Those vary from different motherboards. So reading your MB's manual should help a lot.

No. What Im trying to say is that if you have a new computer that uses DDR400 and you put an old stick of DDR266 in it

pc3200 works fine, it will downgrade. don't put in slower ram than motherboard specs.

NEVER! never put a slower one than the speed of your mobo. However putting a faster ram on a slower mobo is ok. i.e DDR400 at 333MHz mobo.

No, You can have slower but doing so isn't the best for performance.

Having a slower ram can cause some serious issues! Believe me i know this one closely.

the slowest ram will dictate the overall speed.

Maybe for you and your motherboard but most if not all motherboards it will take any ram and auto clock itself. You most likely had a bad ram or a cheap motherboard...

Nope i didn't say it killed my mobo or anything just a major decrease in the overall performance and some other compatibility issues that's all.

ram is cheap, so why would anyone put in slower ram than the MB can handle?
