Do consoles that can be chipped sell better?

Do you own a console or consoles that are chipped?

Would you buy a console that can't be chipped?

I think its a given that if software can be found cheaply people wont mind paying more for the hardware. On top of that I don't belive the companies who make such equipment do so with hope that it wont be chipped or modified in someway. Its a slightly stupid way to look at things I suppose, but we all know that if 50% of people pay premium price for a console and chip it to get games cheaper, or for free; then the other 50% pay the same and pay full price for games, everyone wins. I don't think console chipping hurts the industry, infact I think the ability to modify a console helps the hardware sell.

The new Sony product is region free.. The games can be bought and played anywhere, but the movies cant.. This gives consumers a good deal and still has a local pulling factor, it was a great move by sony.

There are arguements for and against such actions, both of which prove the other wrong, so I dont think there is any correct answer to this question..

Dreamcast = Very easy to pirate = Died
Playstation = Easy to pirate = done amazing and still does
XBox + Playstation = Iffy, but doable = Done amazing
Gamecube = In some aspects exteremly easy = Not doing that good.

Who knows Razz?

I can chip a ps1 without problems.
The ps2 looks a whole lot more difficult but I reckon with a bit of time I could.

Xbox doesn't look that hard and I intend to get one soon.

Gamecube, my knowledge is sketchy on this. But I'm looking.

Anyways the PS3 and XBOX 360 or what ever its going to be called will have mod chips after a couple of months and will be easy to mod i think just because they know (Sony and Microsoft) that it boosts up the selling of the units.

yes yes yes. i mean no1 really knew for sure if ps2's xboxs and GCs could be chipped. i mean there's not really a huge chip for ps2's, there's like 3 main 1s for the xbox and the gc only has the viper. Also look at the gameboy that wasn't chipped and that sold millions. i think because the PSX was so easy to chip and had so many ways it was so popular. i dont think chips enhance sales anymore though because xboxs,ps2s and GC's already had millions of units sold.

modding is the major part. I purchased the xbox first as a dvd player. Then i found out about XBMC. The gaming came as an extra for me.,

Living in Europe i REALLY would like to see more demos or the ability to download demos and burn them on a dvd or whatever and play it on my unmodified next-gen console.

I have almost never bought a bad game for PC because of demos but on console it's like 3 good games for 1 bad or something like that.

chipping makes the hardware sell, yes.

but, when companies are losing £100 per console sold then they're not going to be pleased about it are they?

Ya i have a ps1 chipped alot of wires to solder but not to bad.

Xbox, I have an xbox chipped with excuter 1, easiest chip I've done.

I just got the ps2 Slim & well it looks sketchy to me, the only thing that worries me is the little resistors that you have to solder so the laser won't go bad or something. I might try a FLIP TOP first.

As for the gamecube its to earlier to get a modchip yet I think I'll wait! I only bought it for certain games anyway!

A little bit Smile

Sure, xbox Very Happy

Jenni wrote:

Yes, maybe not Smile Because xbox rocks and I don't have the time for further consoles, except xbox2 of course.

What I wanted to say .. Me and a good friend got the first xboxes. Modded them and filled them with some games (copies of bought games of course). Many other people saw that boxes, played on them, tested them. They were amazed ;D as you could imagine. Well, I know at least 10 people which buyed a modded xbox, after they saw, or heard about our ones Very Happy Mostly they use it as MediaCenter, but they also like the short loading-times, if you play from hdd and that you don't have to change discs every time you wanna play a other game. The original discs are safely tucked in the closet, so our grandchildren can play them in the far future, too. Very Happy

Regards..
